Unlocking and rooting

Sorry if this seems like a dumb question but is it legal in the U.S. to unlock and root a android tablet? I have seen many different responses on the internet and am looking for a conclusive answer.

Yes it's legal. Some people get bootloader unlocking & rooting confused with SIM unlocking. SIM unlocking without carrier permission is what is presently illegal.
