Unroot necessary for sprint?

So, I have had this phone since May, and I am very pleased with it. My mom has an HTC evo 4g, on the same billing plan. My 18th birthday is November 13th, and as a gift she is going to switch phones with me. (She realizes ill put the evo to better use or w/e)
So as of now the plan is to call sprint, and request to switch the numbers to the phones.

My question is this: Do I need to unroot the Optimus (the evo is stock, for now lol) for this process? I have read (can't remember where) that the commands sprint may tell you to use in the dialer, will not work with a custom recovery. I am unaware if any of those commands are used for switching numbers. Also, I am running grom, which to my understanding is a modification of the original sprint gingerbread update.
I wouldn't want to call sprint and have problems that could have been avoided.
Thanks in advance.

If it's a family plan, you can probably just do this through the website by changing the EIN's associated with each phone number and restarting both. If that doesn't work, going to the store may be in order, but it would make sense that this is something that can be done on Sprint's end. I have changed my device on a couple of occasions when I wanted to use an older, more disposable device with better battery life for a while (hiking trips). Just guessing though.

I just did a google search, and from what i read, you can switch to another sprint device (inactivated) , on the same number, for no charge. The only problem is I am switching both phones, so I'm not sure if you can via PC, as it will require 1 or more phones to be disconnected at a time.

Well, if that's the case, I refer back to the days when in school 3 kids could switch papers and check them. :) If you have an old inactive device available that is compatible with the carrier, even an old regular phone (dumbphone?), you could deactivate one of the keepers with that, make the switch on one line, then swap the other out for the dumbphone. Might take as long as driving to the Sprint store, depending on where you live. :D

I thought about that, but unfortunately I don't have an old phone, nor do I know anyone with an old sprint phone. But if I take the phones to the store, will it be noticeable that I am rooted? I plan to keep the phone rooted for my mom, as she has gotten used to the speed of the evo.

Again, my guess is that the only reason Sprint would need to touch your phones is to get the EIN's from them. I have taken my phones in there and I find that most of the staff are not root police, as many of them do it themselves; they only care if it stops them from servicing your needs.
