Unuseable while connected to computer

So when my captivate is connected to the computer to charge I see the charge icon in the notification bar, a large connection picture in the center of the screen, but the the phone is unusable. I cannot access any functions of the phone. As soon as it is disconnected all phone functionality returns. With my EVO I am able to charge, access the SD card, etc. and use the phone simultaneously. Is there a problem with the connection or is this a limitation of the phone?

There's gotta be a way, the reviews from the Samsung event all had charging Galaxy S phones as they displayed them.

Try changing to prompt for usb connection. I think the default is for Kies.
Settings -> Applications -> USB Settings, choose Ask on connection. When you connect it will notify you and you can select connection type (or whatever).
