...not sure what it is.

I checked for an update this morning around 11am. It said there was one and didn't tell me what it was, but it downloaded and asked me to install. I am guessing this is either Froyo or a GPS fix?

I attempted to install it. The phone rebooted and it went to a white/blue screen that said it was installing a software update. It took about 10 seconds, then said "update failed - restarting phone"

The phone rebooted, still with 2.1. When I go in to check for updates, I got a message that said "No Firmware." So, I had to set the date forward to check for updates anymore.

Not sure why the update failed... perhaps because I am rooted?

Hopefully, other people will get this notification when they force check for an update.

I have tried this 3 times (by setting my date manually forward a day or so). I have set all of the renamed bloatware back to their stock names (from .bak to .apk). I think I got all of them. I have one of the unofficial firmware releases on it that I installed using ODIN. Perhaps this is my problem?

Does anybody else have an update notification when they force an update? Are you able to install it?

I'm not rooted and Kies says my firmware is up to date (2.1)....no update notifications of any kind.

Yea, Kies wasn't giving me anything either. I checked on my phone VIA Settings>Software Update>Check For Update

I think it might be the unofficial firmware that I have on the phone that is causing the problem (and possibly the update notification?) I am considering going back to the stock firmware build that came with the phone (if I can find a way to do this). I am afraid that if I install the stock firmware, something goofy will happen and I won't have an update notification anymore.

I just want to see if others are getting this notification and can confirm what this update is before I take all of that time and end up in the same place I am right now.

If it helps anybody, this is what my phone currently displays:

Model Number: Samsung-SGH-I897
Firmware Version: 2.1-update1
Baseband Version: I897UCJH3
Kernel Version: 2.6.29
jetaek.lee@sep-11 #2
Build Number: ECLAIR.UCJF6

I had to change one of them (perhaps the baseband version?) to display a different version so I could view all of the market apps. Perhaps that is part of the problem?

Thanks a lot for that link. I will try that if I decide to go back to stock... but I am not about to do it right now until I get confirmation on what this update it. Since nobody has said anything about having an update available leaves me thinking one of two things. One, I might be the lucky winner of an AT&T contest and they are giving me, and only me, a Froyo update, or I never received the latest official 2.1 update and the phone didn't realize it until today.

The link that Slappy posted to the XDA forum WILL NOT take you back to 100% stock.

Flashing that ROM will not allow you to get the AT&T OTA update, you get either "update failed" or "failed to connect", I forget which.

I think you can still get the AT&T update into that ROM via Kies though.

Safest way to retain your 100% stock is to take a Nandroid backup *before* you attempt to change anything.

I didn't.

Since your baseband says JH3 (non-stock) and the newest update that was released in September was JH7, I would say the notification you are getting is the update everyone has already got.
