Update Checker

Just noticed how when i go to Menu>Settings>About Phone>System Updates I'm getting a message saying:

"Check for update is not available at this time. Try again later."

Instead of saying "Your system is currently up to date" This may be because back a couple weeks when I first got it I tried to root (and failed) via Gingerbreak. I don't think I'll be able to receive OTA updates in the future because of this. Has this happened to anybody else out there? Is there a way to fix it other than a factory reset?

I tried to see what my phone would do, but it would not let me click on "System Updates". The "System Updates" section was not highlighted. I assume it just did not have any updates available, so would not allow me to select it.
