Anybody else getting it?

Terrible version, probably the worst so far. My bud got that in a soak test a few months ago in which every single person complained about it. He stopped using the phone & bought a new one after that update. Sorry, but Motorola has basically abandoned the Admiral.

Ouch.

Yup, I was in that soak as well, back in December. Was also in the soak test in October. Basically they didn't listen to a damn thing we complained about. Ditched my Admiral and found a GNex on eBay since I'm still in my Admiral contract. Moto abandoned that phone even though Sprint is still holding onto it. Sprint didn't have much of a choice since it was their only device equipped with their NEW Direct Connect. I'm sure now that Sprint has the Kyocera Torque they will abandon the Admiral too. It's a shame, nice design, great battery life, relatively durable build but it never should have been released with that crap hardware in it. It's like building a dump truck with a 4 cylinder engine & 200 gallon gas tank... just stupid.

Not only was that release awful, but Motorola Mobility has not released a fix (which could simply be to give the previous version a higher number and send that), they went silent at the end of 2012, and they've kept the test participants locked out of the Motorola Mobility forums.

Hey, I've been trying to get some of the other victims to answer some questions for me, so that I can write a magazine article about this fiasco. Would you be willing to participate?

What's to say? Moto designed a nice phone, put crap hardware in it, then abandoned it.

What's to say?
Oh, there's things that readers would want to read. And I understand that I'm asking you to put more time into what has been a source of frustration for you, but this request is with the idea of making Motorola Mobility face some consequences of throwing its testers under the bus.

Here are the questions that I have at this point:
  1. What motivated you to choose the Motorola Admiral?
  2. What were your hopes and expectations for this release? Which of your expectations were realized, and which were not?
  3. What has been, for you, the best change to come with this release?
  4. What has been, for you, the worst change with this release?
  5. How quickly did problems develop? Did those problems grow with time?
  6. Have you abandoned the Motorola Admiral, in the wake of the effects of the test? (I see that you have!) Have you switched carriers? (Apparently not yet!)
  7. Did/do you experience significant delays between when you attempted to place a call, and when the phone actually began connecting to the network to place the call? How long were those delays initially? Did the delays tend to become longer or shorter? How long are they now? (Just give me the answer when last you used the thing.)
  8. What if any change had/has there been for the battery-life of your set?
Now, if there are other things that you want to tell me, relevant to this situation, then please feel free. If you think that I'm missing an important forest for the trees or important trees in the forest, then please let me know.

I'd appreciate it if you either sent your answers to Motorola@oeconomist.com (actually a forwarder that I can eventually punt when the spammers pick it up) or posted them to the BBS at Oeconomist.com/BBS.

Here are the questions that I have at this point:
  1. What motivated you to choose the Motorola Admiral? I was upgrading my Palm/HP Pre and was looking for the same form factor. I didn't really want a touch keyboard and hate the awkwardness of holding a horizontal keyboard. I also LOVED the battery life the Admiral offered.
  2. What were your hopes and expectations for this release? I was looking for bug fixes, mainly the lag in phone dialing and the overall lag of doing anything at all. Which of your expectations were realized, and which were not? I didn't see any issues fixed in either release.
  3. What has been, for you, the best change to come with this release? Nothing
  4. What has been, for you, the worst change with this release? This release brought the same empty promises as the first release.
  5. How quickly did problems develop? Did those problems grow with time?I would say that the lag definitely increased with time but yet even after a factory reset, the problems would still exist. My guess is that as the apps were updated, they required more & more resources that the Admiral couldn't deliver
  6. Have you abandoned the Motorola Admiral, in the wake of the effects of the test? (I see that you have!) Have you switched carriers? (Apparently not yet!)Yes, I have switched to a GNex that I bought on ebay since I'm still in my Admiral contract. No, I'm still with Sprint & don't plan to leave anytime soon.
  7. Did/do you experience significant delays between when you attempted to place a call, and when the phone actually began connecting to the network to place the call? How long were those delays initially? Did the delays tend to become longer or shorter? How long are they now? (Just give me the answer when last you used the thing.)When placing the 1st call, there would be no delay. Any calls placed after that, there would be a huge delay, typically 45 seconds but I counted as high as 2.5 minutes.
  8. What if any change had/has there been for the battery-life of your set?Battery life was always great. Never noticed poor battery life other than the obvious situations where service was poor.
Now, if there are other things that you want to tell me, relevant to this situation, then please feel free. If you think that I'm missing an important forest for the trees or important trees in the forest, then please let me know. Also noticed issues with certain keys being rather unresponsive to the point that they had to be mashed to work. Seemed to be mostly the vowels, maybe because they were most frequently used.
