Upgrade from S6 or wait for Note 9?

I have a S6 that I've had for over 2 years. The battery isn't lasting like it used to. I've done a cache wipe and made sure all apps are updated, and it's still a bit lacking compared to what it used to do. Doing the cache wipe did help though.

I'm a developer and builder, and there are aspects of the Note 8 that are very attractive to me. I communicate via text and email with quite a few folks, and often take pictures to communicate something. I really like the ability to easily use the s pen to make notes on a photo, or to easily crop and make notes. That functionality alone has me thinking a Note is a great way for me to go.

My phone can take a little abuse being on jobsites. I have my S6 is a UAG case and it's been great, and I see they make a similar case for the Note 8. I like the extra water and dust protection offered by the Note 8. I also like the micro SD card. I'm a long time (20+ years) Verizon customer, and we have multiple lines with them. I checked Best Buy last night (Superbowl Sunday) and they had the Verizon Note 8 in Orchid Gray for $24/month for 24 months. If the game hadn't been on I would have gone in and bought one. I checked this morning and it was $30.66 like the other colors. I did live chat and was told it was on an ad that expired at midnight. Oh well, missed what seems to be the best deal I've seen on that phone.

It has me wondering if I should buy a Note 8 now, or if there is anything in the Note 9 that may be worth waiting for? I'm assuming they will probably move the fingerprint sensor to be under the glass on the front? I have my S6 set up to just wake up with the power button so it's quick to make it usable. I'd anticipate doing the same with any new phone as I use my phone enough that I don't want to fiddle with a sensor or entering a password. Any advice would be really appreciated.

Is there a way if I had anything I didn't want someone that picked up my phone to be able to easily access, to have folders on the SD card that are password protected?

Thanks for any help or advice.

Buy it now why you want /need it.
It's a fantastic phone.
I find the fingerprint scanner really quick and took a couple of days to get used too.
Also put any files or apps or even photos in secure folder away from prying eyes.

I ended up buying a Note 8 today. It wasn't as big in person as I expected. I have large hands and one handing it isn't a problem. So far I really like it. Of course we all know the documentation/instructions that come with new phones isn't great, so now I'll have fun figuring out how things like the edges work, s pen and such. Thankfully there seems to be quite a few YouTube video's on this phone. Any other suggestions?

Definitely make yourself use the features like the S Pen, edge panels and lighting. You're paying a premium for the pen and the edge panels are a big feature for this display. Once you're used to interacting with them, you'll love it and won't even want a different phone.

my wife, who has smaller hands has no problem with the fingerprint sensor on the Note 8. In reality the Note 9 will have very little changes from the Note 8 only carrying that the fingerprint sensor will be placed under the camera still on the back not under the glass. Samsung has a habit of sticking to designs elemets for 2 years before cycling out to a new format. The Note 8 is already dropping pretty fast in price and really is an amazing phone that will blow your S6 out of the water.. I had a Note 5 before I switched and I love this phone.

I set up the facial recognition and so far it's been flawless. Very, very fast. I was wearing sunglasses today and it wouldn't work, so I just entered the pin. Is there a way to have the phone go to fingerprint if facial recognition doesn't work?

I am a fan of the S Pen already. I had to get some measurements on a couple of pieces of property to our architect. I did a quick sketch of the lots and wrote the measurements with lines quickly and easily. I really like using the pen for selecting things off pages and sharing them via text and such as well. Some really useful tools for sure.

What are the lighting features? I haven't done anything yet, other than changing screen resolution because I found out chromecast only works on HD and not above. I like the edge panels. A quick swipe over and the pics of my most frequent contacts are there and it's easy to call or message them.

Really enjoying it so far. The camera is awesome.

Post 3 says that he bought the Note 8. Why wait until September?

1. Didn't see that was the OP.
2. Can still return it if they choose.

Unless my current phone has been rendered inoperable, I wouldn't buy one now knowing the next one is coming.

I'd say go ahead and get the Note8 now. It will be many months before the 9 arrives. The Note8 already has 6GB RAM, Dual Cameras with OIS and USB-C, so it is future proofed already.

I doubt the Note9 will come with much more, it will probably be more of an improvement on the Note8 with as you said, Fingerprint Reader Under Display, probably 6GB RAM like the Note8, improved Dual Cameras and maybe a larger Battery.

Treat yourself to a Note8 with UAG case and 256GB MicroSD card, this thing is a mini computer in your pocket :)
