So I was running stable on 1.5 and then I upgraded to 2.1 on my Eris via the VW software update. Now when I try to make a phone call the menu button repsonse is really slow and sometimes I have to hit the buttons/menu list more to than once to get it to dial... really lagging. Then when the phone does engage I see the phone icon in the top menu bar and on the screen but there's no sound. Sometimes I can hear it dial but they can't hear me. Sometimes I have a call coming in and when I answer the screen says I'm engaged, but there's no sound. So I'll reboot the phone and then everything works again. I usually just leave the phone on all day/night and charge overnight. So it seems over a long period of time, something is happening. Anybody else experience this? Phone issues with 2.1? Is there a fix/reset somehow? Thanks in advance. A

I haven't had this issue, although Ive had other minor ones. I was told by verizon to go into Apps>Manage Apps and find a relevant app and clear the data, or even force close (there should be a button for one or both of those once you access a particular app). Do that and then do a soft reset which involves removing the battery while the phone is running. Keepp it out for 10 sec, then reboot the phone.

Hopefully this will help the issue. If not, then a factory reset will be necessary. This is a last resort as it will completely wipe the phone and start it fresh, so make sure you have your contacts and calendar, etc all sync'd up. Your apps will be removed but your market will have the list of apps you had downloaded so can re-download them. To do the factory reset, just go to Menu>Settings>Privacy>Factory Reset.

Good luck.

I bit the bullet and did the factory reset and now my phone is working really good but i lost the ability to look at my pictures in the list format which blows...

PS....I take that back... I am still getting what you describe and i lose my sound and ability to hear or talk... very weird and inconvenient

This seems to be a common problem that some people are having since the upgrade to 2.1. I would contact Verizon Wireless support (or go to a store) and they should replace your device under warranty. I'd tell them that you already tried to do a factory reset.

That's the "silent call" bug. The only temp fix I know of is rebooting your phone...

I'm waiting to hear about and update with all the fixes.

I've heard that too but it hardly seems like a hardware issue when the phone works normally after reboot and it all started after this update.

I experienced the "silent call" bug today, stopped by local Verizon store and they thought it might be the phone. The associate spent some time on the computer and said he did not see anything in there system about the issue. They are sending me a "new" refurbished phone by Friday pm. I wonder if I will have to update that one to 2.1.
I am also experiencing a ton of lag and I have about 1/2 of the signal strength that is normally there.
I have had more force closed apps over the last 3 days after updating to 2.1 then I have had during the last 6 months since I bought the phone.
What will be next?

So glad I got leak v2, no problems since I installed. Seems like the official Verizon OTA is giving most people major issues with their devices. I think I will run leak v3 and try to avoid the OTA!

They are the same.

Yeah, most of the bugs showing up after the 2.1 update are very new so I am not surprised A Verizon rep hadn't heard about it. Here are most of the bugs you could see: [NOTE - more often then not, a factory reset after the 2.1 update will fix most of these problems. I did one and it fixed allot of mine.]

1. The "Silent call" or Phone goes Silent bug -
a: This includes but is not limited to the phone not ringing when calls come in.
b: The phone lagging when using applications that require sounds for inputs such as the dialer app, volume control etc...
c: When placing a call, it will show you are connected but no sound will com from the earpiece, speaker, or bluetooth.
d: Phone will not go to sleep after setting it down.

[Solution - however temporary, a reboot will kick it back in shape.]

2. The camera resolution isn't as good - I personally have seen this, but I'm not so sure it's the camera itself. I went to my older photos what I had taken with 1.5 and they too look grainy.

[no solutions as of yet]

3. Weather app/widget force closes constantly - I have not experienced this problem but many have.

[solution - I've heard by going to manage applications and clearing the data for the weather app and widget fixes the problem.]

4. Contact ringtones stop working - this was due to still using a Task manager or task killer. The new "people" app that runs in the processes needs to remain running for all of your contact customization to work.

[solution - exclude the People app from the end task list then reboot your phone. Once you ended the people app process once it won't work right unless you reboot. Or remove your task killer and reboot.]

5. Battery life seems to be lower - I've seen this with my Eris, however if I refrain from playing with it most of the day the battery life is about the same as it was before.

[solution - if you don't carry a charger around with you everywhere, try to refrain from playing with your phone too much, (it's hard I know) especially the apps that use the mobile network allot.]

6. 50% or less signal - this is for everyone across the board. Haven't heard of any fixes however it doesn't seem to have a negative effect.

7. Calendar app force closes - Haven't had this one happen but it seems common.

[no solutions as of yet]

8. Text messages are really slow to send - After sending a text, it usually hangs. I've even had to delete and resend.

[solution - after factory reset, it was fixed.]

So far these are the most common issues I've seen myself and with other people's posts. I will suggest a factory reset once you've updated to 2.1. I had a ton of issues after the update but ALLOT of them were gone after I did the reset. :)

"Silent Call"/"Phone going Silent" Bug Update -

Ok, I've narrowed it down. Anyone that sees this pattern too let me know.

This issue seems to happen prominently after someone leaves me a voice mail and I select to listen to it from the Notifications bar at the top. It's happened consistently!

I'll get a call, which I hear just fine. They leave a voice mail, which I hear the notification just fine. But once I select to call my voice mail from the notification bar, I never hear the voice mail operator. Then it all just goes to pot, the phone lags when I use the dialer and volume and everything. Then I reboot and the call to VM works.

New here, but not new to Eris. I ended up doing a factory reset after backing everything up. My issues were: Weather FC, tried the cache/data thing, did not work. Lost all my speed dials (except vm) and could not redo them. Battery is sucking but I have been playing w/it quite a bit this week, sooooo, I don't know if that's new or not. Anyway, after the factory reset my two issues were cleared up.

HOWEVER - I do notice now that the phone is way more laggy than it was. Also now when calls come in, it rings at least twice before the # comes on screen, then at least once more before the called ID kicks in and tells me who the # belongs to and then the pic ID pops up if I have one.

I have Advanced Task Killer installed, but have stopped using it. I just changed over to the Helix Launcher to see if that will help w/the battery vs the Sense one. I don't know. It is, without a doubt, wayyyyy less responsive. Several touches sometimes to get a program/whatever to come up. Irritating isn't the word.

Oh, almost forgot, I noticed the morning that I couldn't get the phone to respond to touches on screen when it was laying flat, if I picked it up and held it it would respond, but not when it was down. I can't duplicate that now, but it did it several times in a row this morning.

Thanks everyone. After reading all these posts, I gotta think that it's a software issue. It really has to be. Somewhere a really smart software engineer has to write a patch and release it to the world. I am probably going to do the factory reset to try to fix it, but I really believe there needs to be a software glitch. If I would have known this issue would come up, I never would have updated the OS. If I wanted phone issues, I would have moved OFF VERIZON and went with the iPhone on AT&T!!!!

I'll keep you posted.

Btw, I'll keep an eye on this observation... I do recall having voicemail during the Silent Bug.

I did delete Advanced Task Killer and went with another called TasKILLER. Maybe there's a conflict there..... we'll see.

Maybe but I'm not too sure. I had Advanced Task Manager and removed it when it gave me issues with ringtones. I since then have done a factory reset while still getting the bug.

The darndest thing is, I can't reproduce the conditions to cause the bug again. It just happens when it wants. However It's a move in the right direction that we have narrowed it down to an issue involving Voicemail.

Mine just hits the siltent call at random (2.1v3). Doesn't seem to be dependent on the amout of voice usage and checking voicemail doesn't seem to make it more frequent. One day it'll happen and it may be 3-5 days or more before it occurs again.

I've gone as far as doing a hard reset and only using integrated apps thus the bug still lives. That is honestly the only issues I've ran into with the latest 2.1

Has anybody tried to uninstall the update and then reinstall it? (If this is even possible I dont know)

My wife's phone received the update and the phone app constantly froze on her. I did a factory reset and the bug still persists. Sometimes the phone freezes when making or receiving a call and many times when she answers a call or makes a call you can't hear the other person on the line and vise versa. When this happens she has to battery pull the phone. She's very used to this after owning the BB Storm 1. She's not happen that she has to battery pull her Android phone now. I'm probably going to take the phone back to VZW today or tomorrow. Anyone else have any other ideas after the factory reset failed to help?

Oh and P.S.
Though I'm still seeing the same problem after a factory reset, thanks to Dottom22 for sharing the elaborate findings. I'm glad it worked for some of you. I'll try to remember to let you guys know what my in store experience is like. Message me if I forget though.
