Upgrading from Oreo to Pie

Hey I saw that they were going to start releasing Pie limited to Samsung owners and had a question.

I was Apple for the last 10 years and not sure how major OS upgrades work on Android and specifically on the Note series. Does it completely wipe your phone contents and you have to start from scratch? Are your drive contents safe from deletion or do you need to reload everything? Asking since I have about 400gb of photos and videos on the internal storage.

Appreciate the responses!

For fully released versions, I have never had to start over nor have I lost data.

Sometimes people feel that wiping their cache partitions or even doing a factory reset solves problems... but that would be a last resort.

It can't hurt to wipe cache partition and may help. Same for app storage cache data.

Anytime you use pre release it's a good idea and during Oreo beta I had to as well as factory erase.

If you have personal data then two backup sets are always in order, Mac or iPhone as well.

I wouldn't personally consider putting a beta firmware on my daily driver.

The beta stages can be buggy while people feedback bugs to be ironed out.

Stability can be an issue.

Back when Samsung ran the beta program for the S7/Edge phones, I installed whatever beta it was on my phone but that was only because I had two S7 Edge phones and only installed the beta on one.

I would not install the beta on my daily use phone.

Think twice about doing a beta install. Be prepared for hiccups and bugginess such as battery drain, apps not working properly, lag, etc.

If you do a beta install and then complain about it, don't say you haven't been warned.

I did it on my S8+ but I was prepared for bugginess and I know how to troubleshoot and didn't complain and waited patiently for updates and for the final product.

I had the beta on my S7E as well. No issues with mine. But, everyone's experience will be different.

For me, Oreo 8.0 b4 the Settings app kept crashing in a near loop. No other reports of same. Forced me to do a factory reset. That wasn't the only gottcha during Oreo either. Was using S8+ while N8 was my mainstay. Always prefer testing on 2nd phone.

Bought an Essential One just to experience Pie.
