I am replacing the factory 8gb card with a 16gb. Can I just copy all the contents from the old card to the new? Do I need to do this if there are no files I need to save? I know there Re other files on the card besides my pictures and music so I was not sure.

Simply copy your SD card to a folder on your computer, then copy it to the new SD card. Simple as that. Then everything stays in the same place, and you should have no problems. I have done this several times, as I have switched to larger cards.

^^This.

Also make sure that your card is formatted. I believe the phone prompts you if it isn't, but I always like to use the PC for this.

But will this work for apps stored on the SD card as well? I know that there has to be some sort of copy protection on those. Or has anyone tried this yet? Nexus One users, I'm looking at you.

I believe apps on the SD card are by by design not copy protected, hidden, or encrypted.. thus the reason why a lot of apps don't offer that option.

One clarification question...

Will the simple act of copying the information from one card to another also catch applications that are stored on the card (stock Froyo) without needing to re-install them?

Effectively, at the end of this copy, nothing will be different with the card-installed applications and files with the exception of having more SD space available - correct?

Thanks!

Even, if you have to re-install some apps, the "app data" should copy just fine. So if you have a game or other app that needs install again, your saved games and other saves should still be in tact.

Notice i said SHOULD!

Now, the real questions is how do you know what to delete? Android doesnt 'Hide' anything. I wish system files should be.

Would this simple copy and paste work for rooted phones as well? My phone has tons of files on the SD card and I'm beginning to worry about space left.

Sorry for bumping an old thread but for those who have upgraded their cards, after copying the files from the old card to the computer, do you copy the files back on to the new card with the card in the phone and plugged in or do you copy to the new card directly in the computer and then put the card in the phone?

Thanks.

I already did this same thing 4 months ago... it was as simple as copying the old one as a whole folder to my PC and loading on the NEW card, then in the phone.... no prob at all...

I copied via the phone because I didn't have an adapter. I think the only difference is I had to re-do the customization of my notification sounds for audio files that were on the SD card, whereas I suspect if I had done the move with an adapter so that the phone was off the entire time, I probably wouldn't have needed to re-do them.
