Hey guys

Just wondering, how would I go about upgrading my samsumg S i9000, currently on gingerbread, to jelly bean?

I've read some tutorials and such, and they ramble on about 'ROMs'. Are these legit Jelly Bean firmwares or are they mimic version? (by mimic version, I mean did they just make their own like-a-version of JB)

What are the risks in doing it?

And what are the advantages in doing it?

Cheers fellas :)

Your handset does not support Jelly Bean officially so custom ROMs are the way to go if you want the latest firmware on your device. ROMs are relatively safe but even stable builds have a few bugs. If you want to install a ROM, you need to root your phone first and install a custom recovery.

I just upgraded from Gingerbread 2.3.7 to Jelly Bean 4.2.2 and could not be happier. It is almost like having a new phone; it is faster, more responsive and nicer to use. Highly recommended.

Mind you, I did sweat blood worrying about bricking it BUT it all worked first time and without any troubles. I used SRS Root and a web page for instructions using CWM to load the CyanogenMod OS. Now I don't need a new phone! When 4.3 stable is available, I will upgrade again.

I should also mention that backing up CORRECTLY is vital and is something I did not do properly, so I lost a few contacts and a lot of my messages and call logs. Find the best apps to back up off phone before you do a factory rest.

You live and learn. :(

Im becoming more and more tempted!!
But I'm still very hesitant... I don't want to brick it!! Haha
Will it only brick if I don't do exactly what the guides say, or is there that % that it still might despite accuracy to follow?

Flashing custom firmware is VERY safe as long as you follow the instructions carefully. Of course, spontaneous events such as hardware failure apply to this, although it is very unlikely.

Update.
I have now upgraded to CyanogenMod 4.3 nightly 11/9. It is working better than I expected and the upgrade itself was not traumatic. The phone is faster and smoother than ever. There may be some bugs but I haven't found any. The battery life is far better.
One thing I have found is that, after buying Titanium Premium that it is easier and more effective to back up all Contacts, SMS and call logs to my GMail account and to restore from there. There are free apps that do it reliably and well. When I find the best one, I will pay for the premium version. Titanium may be powerful but it is not easy to use, so my 6.5 bucks has, in effect, been wasted.

Update
Now on CyanogenMod 16/8 nightly, after 13 and 15/9. Just gets better and better.:D

Oops, that should have read 16/9. Now on 19/9; phone has never been better, faster and smoother, lag is nearly gone, no random reboots, and battery life is better than I thought possible.

Now on 21/9 nightly and very good. I can see why Samsung hasn't upgraded the S to 4.3; they would sell less new phones. Ha!
