I did some google research and found others that had this issue. My phone was charging and at 100% in the car and got super hot by the plug and the usb cords plastic melted onto the usb inside the phone. Now I cant charge it. I tried putting another charger into it after it cooled down and it melted that chargers cord tip too.

I ordered a replacement USB part off ebay to fix it myself, as the rest of the phone still works as long as my battery is charged. If that don't fix it, guess I'm moving to the nexus 5. I took it apart last night and its a pretty easy fix from the ifixit tutorial I followed.

Anyone else replaced the usb before? And if so did it hold up?

It was a 1amp off brand from ebay...so I am sure that was my first mistake...but its all I had available and never thought anything of it because it worked plenty of times before.

never go off brand! never go cheap! not when it comes to charging products!

get the Nexus 5! you will love it! and check out AT&T GoPhone. i was with Sprint since 2008 and just left to go with GoPhone with the Nexus 5 - and the speed and coverage is NIGHT AND DAY!

good luck!!!

Thanks. Yea I wont anymore. I have a bunch of old palm pre/hp touchpad chargers that I hope should be ok to still use. Has me freaked out now. I am going phoneless until Thursday or Friday when the part comes to try & repair it. It was only $6 for a usb part replacement. If this works i'm good to go for $6...I already took the phone apart and am ready to go for when the part arrives. Figured it was worth a shot to fix and save myself some $ even though I want the nexus 5.

...if not, then I'll go for the off contract 32gb nexus 5.

For those that may run into this issue as well, I replaced the usb part for $6 as mentioned above and so far my phone is back to normal and working again. An easy fix overall that didn't take long at all!

nice congrats! but please don't let that success stop you from getting the Nexus 5! you will love it!!!

Yea, I want the n5, but having a 3 and 4 year old, xmas $ is all on them. After I recoupe from xmas, I'll probably save for a n5 & the wireless charger (so I can re-live my palm pre days of wireless charging haha). I definitely miss that! I played with a n5 at the store and it looks awesome! Recently having the Galaxy Nexus 4.3 update & purchasing a 5900 zerolemon battery, this phone should hold me over I hope! I definately look forward to kitkat and the n5's power one day...from what i've ready the battery last pretty good too. Just happy a simple repair got me going again for now.
