USB Connection Problem

I'm using two USB cables: I have the one that came with my device--when I plug it into the wall charger it charges quickly, but when I plug it into my my laptop it just charges the phone. I have another cable that I bought on Amazon which charges very slowly when plugged into the wall charger, but when I plug it into my laptop it just connects as a "media storage device" and nothing else.

Sometimes I can get my phone to run as a Mass Storage Device if I click Settings==>More Settings==>USB Utilities==>Connect storage to PC just before plugging the phone in with the Amazon cable. Sometimes it works for as long as I have it plugged in, sometimes it doesn't.

I just noticed this today, and everything worked just fine a couple of weeks ago. I'm running Android 4.1.2. I've heard there's a new firmware out there, and I was hoping it would fix this problem, but I can't connect to Kies (What POS software) via USB cable to backup my photos and contacts.

Any suggestions?

Download USB mass storage enabler and connect your phone as USB mass storage and it will work.
