USB file transfer stops after a portion of one folder

I am unable to transfer files from my PC to my GalaxyS22 without it crapping out after only a partial folder transfer. I have enabled file sharing as a USB action on my Android, I have tried a different USB cable and plug on my Win 10 PC but I still can't get a smooth file transfer. When I attempt, the transfer dialog box pops up to show minimal progress, and then disappears, and I am left with an incomplete folder transfer. Crazy thing is that it used to work smoothly. Was there an update recently that could have introduced an issue? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to Android Central! How much data is being transferred? I've found that transferring huge amounts at a time over USB can be problematic. Can you try copying files over in smaller batches?

Yeah, I've tried individual folders. Still doesn't get all the way through. Never used to have an issue with transferring larger batches of data.

Have you tried incrementally trying smaller number of files? For example, start with 5 and see if it work. Move to 10. Find where it starts to fail.

It's very possible the app you're using isn't cooperating, you could try a different file manager.

I can transfer a few 100MB on my devices before they simply disconnect.

Are you using a desktop or laptop PC? Are you using the fastest type of USB port on your PC? Is it USB 3.2 Gen 1 or USB 3.2 Gen 2 (which is available depends on your motherboard)?

Definitely make sure you're using a known good cable even if you tried another , 9 out of 10 times it's a cable issue , I had few cables in the past and it took the last one to work that is your main transfer communication between computer and device. I usually load them to my email or Google drive on the computer then download them on my device from one of those sources without a computer.

I bought another USB cable today and will try it again. I'm hoping that's all it is. I'll try the Google Drive option as well.

Check the total file path length. I had the same problem. After some tedious one file at a time copying, I found the files that wouldn't copy. They all had long file path lengths (I don't remember how many characters). After shortening the file names, they copied over with no problems.

I think I figured it out!!! SUBFOLDERS!!! I was unknowingly transferring some music that had subfolders (Disc 1, Disc 2, etc...), and that seems to be the sticking point. Never thought to look at that level as it was never an issue before, but it seems to be working as long as I transfer on the single folder level. Thanks for the help everybody!!

Glad you got it resolved!

That leads me to believe it is a file path length issue. If the total file path length is too long, those files won't copy and you won't get an error; it just stops when it gets to the first one. As I said previously, that's what caused my problem when copying my music library to my new S24 Ultra.

The total file path length is the number of characters in the file name (minus file type) + combined total number of characters of the folder names (including the slashes). For example: C:\Users\XXXXX\Music\Arlo Guthrie\Alice's Restaurant\alices restaurant.mp3 would be: 66 characters. Because there are spaces and special characters in that file path, it would actually be longer depending on the file system being used.

Android supports the ex13, ex14, and F2FS file systems, the max characters allowed for those systems is 255 bytes, or 255 characters (1 character = 1 byte).
