Has anyone tried USB tethering? If yes, can you share some pointers on how to enable that?

Last I heard that both 2.2.1 and 2.3.4 have out-of-box support for the same. May be I am wrong.

New Android user, so may be missing something here.

Thanks.

I installed the drivers, i connected the phone... Windows 7 (64 bit) promptly recognized the device.

I went to Settings and enabled USB tethering mode... I see the below message:

Unable to connect to data network, turning off Tethering / Hotspot. Your plan may not have the Tethering/Hotspot service, please contact your phone company.

How can I get this Tethering to work via USB? i have used Palm Treo earlier and was able to Tether instantly without issues.

Any help to get this working is appreciated.

The message comes up because you have not paid to have that service active.

Xoom+Root = Perfect Match

Assuming you can root the device, it's apparently possible to tether without the fee. But tethering period is kinda moot until 4G-class networks and devices cover a larger area. The phone will run tTorrent and other network intensive programs just fine.

Not heard of any apps which can root the Echo after the Gingerbread update.

Any free apps (similar to PDAnet / EastTether) which I can use? any thoughts? I am not a heavy tethering user. It is just an ad-hoc use for me... once a month or something.

Hm, that's a fair summation. I think Sprint lets you add and remove services "at any time", ask around whether stuff like Tethering is a block-fee service or a days-used pro-rated service.
