use bootstrap to go from rooted froyo to rooted gingerbread?

I'm currently on rooted Froyo on the D2. Can I simpy drop the rooted Gingerbread onto my SD card, bootstrap into recovery mode, and install the zip? Do I have to wipe data first? Anything else to do at all?
