Hello,

I have a Droid RAZR MAXX HD with an off-contract Verizon plan (with grandfathered unlimited data). It's running stock 4.4.2.

I recently moved to a location in California where Verizon coverage sucks, so I want to try out a GSM-based provider. I saw that both t-mobile and AT&T had prepaid plans. Is it possible for me to buy a 1-month prepaid SIM from AT&T/T-Mobile and pop it in my RAZR MAXX, and switch to the GSM radio to 'try out' at+t/tmobile service? And then swap back my verizon SIM in, switch the radio, and be back to my existing Verizon plan?

I think my phone has already been SIM-unlocked by Verizon (but I'm not 100% so I guess I'll have to call international support to confirm).

Thanks,
-Jeff

Welcome to Android Central! I don't think that's possible, because the GSM radio on the Razr Maxx HD is only for 4G LTE mobile data reception, not for voice. Verizon still uses CDMA for voice signal (Voice over LTE is still not available yet).

Thanks.

Are you sure? I think this is a world phone. There is another thread on this forum (I can't post links, so it's here: h_t_t_p://forums.androidcentral.com/droid-razr-hd/215884-razr-razr-maxx-hd-international.html)

As such, if sim-unlocked, it should be able to run in GSM mode with any mobile operator's SIM in the slot, no?

I realized I have an old iPhone 5s in a box for work ... I suppose I could just try popping a prepaid AT&T SIM in my RAZR MAXX HD and see what happens. If no worky, I can just use the iPhone 5s to test out AT&T coverage.

All the radios are there. It is a world phone and voice and data is functional over GSM. However, it's been programmed to not work with domestic SIMs. look up "SIM unlock" for solutions. There are people who used it on ATT networks.
