Use the hosts file to defeat in-app ads?

In the /system/etc directory there is a hosts file.
Assuming that we could edit that file, what would happen if the in-app ad servers were remapped to localhost?

You're basically describing what half of the adblocking apps already do every day. Root->Install Adfree = No more ads.
