Using a Verizon version on T-Mobile...

So I bought the Verizon version at full retail price in store, and I've been using it on T-Mobile since it gets full LTE and HSPA. The only thing I'm worried about is software updates. It won't check for updates in GSM mode.
I have a Verizon prepaid sim that I can pop in to check for updates right now, but I worry that if I let that line expire it might not check for updates on the inactive sim.

Does anybody know if a Verizon phone will pull updates with an inactive Verizon sim or must it be active?

Interesting, and good to know! I can't help about Verizon->Tmo but I did take my M8 from ATT->Tmo and 2 things happened;
-Android did not update any more but I still got HTC updates in the app store.
-I was no longer able to send pic messages with texts. I think that was a Tmobile issue but it never got resolved. So, you may have some glitches like that, maybe not.

It depends entirely on Verizon. For example, my Samsung Galaxy Alpha from AT&T only gets update when using an active AT&T SIM and in US with AT&T network. Verizon can do the same. However, HTC typically publish firmware RUU files on its web site so that you can manually update it. The downside is doing so will wipe all data.

Why wouldn't you just buy the unlocked version of the HTC 10? Then you wouldn't have to worry about any carrier updates - you would get them straight from HTC with no issues.

Sorry but what's the point of paying full retail for a Verizon version which is subpar compared to the unlocked version. I understand people on Verizon not having a choice but if you are on T-Mobile why get the Verizon version for full price when you can get the better unlocked version which works on T-Mobile and AT&T?

I pull updates on my Motorola over WiFi with no SIM on Verizon

It really could go either way.

I got updates on my DROID BIONIC without active service.

Because I had a preorder from HTC that got delayed and I didn't feel like waiting. Digital river is a terrible distributor in my experience so and by that time it was in stores. I don't care about a Verizon logo or bloat that I disable and hide. I don't even mind waiting longer for major updates, I just don't want to get NO updates of any kind.

Digital River is terrible, I agree. I have an extra HTC 10 unlocked if you want to purchase from me. Not looking to make any money on it, just want to avoid the hassle of returning to DR. It's Glacial Silver if you're interested. I'll give it to you for what I paid.

I have a Carbon Gray if you're interested. I don't want to have to deal with the hassle of returning it.

Same with AT&T version of One M7, would only update with AT&T SIM.

Well maybe I'll just stick with the Verizon prepaid service then as I don't want to miss updates. I'm fine with the service, I'm just trying to build credit so that's the only real reason I wanted to keep the T-Mobile post paid account. I don't know how much credit I'd even realistically build using T-Mobile anyways.

If it's unlocked, even if it's carrier brander, shouldn't you receive updates for the carrier you're using it on?

I know it works like that in Canada so I can't see why it would be different in the States.

It never worked that way. A Verizon branded phone has different hardware and software than unlocked or T-mo phone. Cross flashing is usually forbidden unless you hacked phone's CID.

Oh, ok! Thanks for the info =)
It's the other way around, here.
