Using Google Voice visual VM with my regular verizon #?

I thought I heard that there is a way you can use Google Voice visual voice mail for messages received through you your regular cell number? Some kind of forwarding process? Can someone walk me through this? Am I totally off base here? Thanks!

1. get a google voice invite, google.com/voice
2. setup account for a voicemail only or a different number
3. get google voice on your phone
4. Login and setup everything with google voice and follow instructions it gives
5. Listen to voicemails in google voice program
6. You can also get a different phone number with google voice, this won't interfere with your original phone. You can make phone calls and SMS with your google voice number and share a box for voicemails.

Assuming that you have Google Voice, and that you have added our Verizon Wireless number to your account, go into Google Voice from a web browser on your computer. Go into "Settings". On that first, "Phones" page, there should be an option next to the VZW number to activate Google voicemail on that phone. It should be pretty easy to follow the prompts (rather than deactivate and then reactivate VM for my phone, I hope that you'll be able to get it without the details of what you do from there.)

I do the same thing, I setup groups in it where my friend, family etc get one number, and anything coming on on the GV number with a customer contact get a different message.

They get the one from GVoice, but I can customize per group what message they hear.

Goto the top right of the screen to settings. Click on the Voicemail tab and record new. It will call your phone make a new greeting and set which group hears it.

Hm I see what you did... is that my only option as a workaround? There's no way to separate the two like I can't have my Verizon number and my Verizon voicemail and have my Google number with my Google voicemail?

I would prefer not to have my voicemails forwarded to Google voicemail.

You can as long as you are giving out the corresponding # to the people you want to go to that specific voicemail service.. and you may have to go into the GV settings on a PC to disable using the GV voicemail for all messages...

On the phone in Settings my Voicemail service is set to "My carrier"... as far as I can see there are no settings under the Voicemail tab in Google Voice for all messages

You try settings from a PC too? It may not make a difference... there has to be a way to "undo" it... maybe delete app from phone and reinstall? That's about all I got lol

To use both voice mails and keep them seperate I set up Gvoice (via pc) to handle only the calls going to my Gvoice phone number. But here's the beauty part, you can set it up so the people who call the Google number will ring your VZW number and they will not be able to identify your VZW number. If you don't accept the call and they choose to leave you a message you can view that message through the visual voice mail via your Gvoice account. Note, VZW charges you for this feature. Also, if you're getting calls from anyone you don't want to talk to, you can go in to your Gvoice settings to block their calls and automatically direct them to your Gvoice mail with a custom message of your choice. How cool is that!

btw; I never enabled the Google Voice app on my phone. As I read the intro., I thought it would take over all voice mail functions so I never set it up.

If I follow what you are saying, I do this as well and do not get a charge from VZW for this feature...

Well, my big problem/issue is I need them to work independently of each other. I use Google Voice to handle my DJ company so I really can't ignore calls since I really don't know who is calling me for a job. And I like the separation between Google Voice and my personal number since I don't give that out for work/isn't on my business card.

I was hoping with my switch from Windows Mobile the integration would be smoother, I just didn't know it'd be this integrated haha. Thanks guys, I'll give Verizon a call and see what they have to say...


EDIT: the reinstall didn't help, I gave that a shot earlier and when I called my personal number I didn't get any voicemail at all...

You should be able to have Google Voice release it's hold on your voice mail to calls placed directly to your cell phone number.

Funny enough, mine said Activate Google Voicemail on this phone so I clicked to activate it, refreshed the page, then clicked "Deactivate".

It was a backwards way around but it did the trick, I'm free. Thanks
