Using Rom Manager for Backup

First let me apologize for the question I'm about to ask... I'm new at this.

I just installed Rom Manager and flashed Clockwork Recovery Mod. Before I went any further, I thought it would be wise to backup my current rom. When I clicked Backup Current ROM and named the backup, my phone rebooted into Recovery without creating a backup. I then proceeded to successfully backup my phone from within Recovery. Is this what is supposed to happen, or am I supposed to be able to make a backup without ever booting into Recovery?

Thanks for the help!

I guess I have to apologize again. I changed absolutely nothing, but it worked after a couple more tries. Moderators, please feel free to delete this thread.

just for your possible clarification:

when you create a backup via RomManager, you're asked to name it--and then it immediately reboots the phone to create the backup (you'll see text on the screen showing items being backed up & a progress bar) in ClockworkModRecovery.

glad you got it figured out! when it doubt, back it up!

Yup...strange it didn't start the process automatically the first time, but it's basically just going to start the process you did manually after booting into recover.

For what it's worth, I pretty much ALWAYS recommend booting into recovery and then performing whatever it is you're trying to do manually. Things seem to always be a little bit screwy when the jobs are set up in ROM manager. ESPECIALLY WHEN INSTALLING NEW ROMS. Just use what happened to you as a learning experience, as you now know how to navigate the menus and commands in Recovery after figuring out how to do the backup manually.

Thanks for the input guys. I've learned a lot in a very short amount of time. If only I could settle on a particular ROM, I'd be in good shape.

ROM Manager is helpful for installing Clockworkmod, but I find that in the long run it's better to know how to backup and flash ROMs directly in Clockworkmod. Cyber Warrior's guide in the rooting subforum.is a great guide that includes screenshots to guide you through the process.
