Using the camera flash as a flashlight on my blackberry was a fantastic feature. Using it at night in the car, in the airplane, even around the house it was great. The trick was to bring up the video recorder (but not actually start recording) with flash set to on, and it would stay on. I have not found out how to do this with the Droid. Ideas anyone??

There's an app for the Samsung Galaxy that turns on the LED without having to pull up video. I suspect someone will make one soon for the droid.

That would be fantastic. If anyone has found this app, please post ASAP. Thanks!

how do most of the flashlight apps work? i find most of the time, if i just turn on the screen, it's quite bright. bright enough to find the lock for my keys, so i haven't tried anything else...

Well on my Storm, Quick Launch had a "Flashlight" feature on it that used the LED flash for the camera and I used the rcap out of it! That'd be great to have the same feature for this.

Infact I would imagine with it being so open source that developers may even be able to use the flash functionallity without having to activate the camera.

The reason the storm had to was because the flash was closed to developers.

There's a cool flashlight widget called MotoTorch Lite. Download, create a widget on your home page... one touch turns it on... another turns it off. Works great! Uses the flash LEDs as a light source. Also can be used to turn on the LEDs for capturing video (which doesnt have a light on feature for some reason).
