Using the Samsung Galaxy tablet on another network

If I buy the Samsung Galaxy tablet from somewhere like Best Buy or Home Shopping Channel, do I need to use a certain wireless provider or can I use Verizon or other? Conversely, if I buy a tablet from Sprint do I have to use it on their network or can I use it on another network?
