Verification Code not arriving

I have recently moved phones (Motorola G 4th gen to G 6th gen) and cannot get WhatsApp to work. I have the same phone number but a new SIM. Whenever I request a verification code by SMS or by call nothing ever comes. Can anyone help? I can send SMS from the phone and can send Facebook messages and open webpages. The only other app that doesn't work is Google Duo, which also does not have verification codes arrive.
I am guessing it is an app blocking the message arriving but I have no apps that I can see would do this and I get the same problem when on WiFi and network.
Can anyone help, please? I use WhatsApp to organise my son's sports clubs.

I had this issue using Pulse SMS. The way round it is to install Android Messages and set it as default. Install your apps and then go back to your original SMS app.

Thanks for the reply. I've just tried that and sadly it didn't change anything. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
