Verizon and International Travel

So, this year I'll be traveling to two places that do not have CDMA coverage, Mexico and St. Lucia, and we'll be taking our Moto X and iFone 4Gs (both on Verizon). For you guys that travel internationally, what do you, find a prepaid SIM or just try and roll with your carrier's international plan? T-Mobile doesn't appear to be a real option for international travel on their prepaid plans, and I cringe to have to look at AT&T. I HATE, I mean H-A-T-E those guys.

I checked out LemonSIM, and the voice coverage is there but they don't offer data for St. Lucia or Mexico. Data is my main need. Arguably, my only real need.

If it is a Verizon 4g capable iPhone (5 or 5s), then it should be factory sim unlocked. If you have a 4s then you will have to contact Verizon to have them unlock it. If you have a 4th generation iPhone (iPhone 4),then that doesn't have gsm radios, so it won't work on GSM networks. Moto x is factory sim unlocked. A local prepaid sim would work, if the phone is unlocked and has gsm radios .

Thanks for the confirmation in the unlocked department (I also have an old GNex I may hand to her). Mostly, I'm trying to figure out what service to go with. It certainly seems like the great unknown!

You might be able to get by data wise using wifi, via hotspots such as the one your hotel probably has, and at internet cafes. Verizon does have an international plan, but it costs a fortune.

Yeah, Verizon is insane. I assume they hand you a GSM Card? The area of Mexico we're going to doesn't have a lot of WiFi (a friend that is a missionary is getting married there, and lives in the semi-middle of no where). Apparently a prepaid sim is the way to go. In St. Lucia, we won't spend much time around WiFi. We are spending the vast majority of our time away from the resort scene. All of the island is blanketed with coverage, but it's all GSM. I can't find the map, but once I stumbled on a CDMA coverage map for the island, but it's a very, very small portion and a portion we aren't planning on spending time in anyway.

I just wish there was something stateside that would offer good coverage/data purely out of convenience. But Verizon is god awful insane if they think I'm paying $25 for 100MB of coverage when stuff like this is out there. Getting information on what to go with in St. Lucia is shady at best. :p

If you use Verizon's international data package, it would be $25/100mb. You would have to sign up for this plan before go.

If not, st. Lucia would be $20.48 per mb, or in excess of $20,000 for a GB.

Is there a more insane rate anywhere? Crazy, ain't it!?

Att charges $30/120mb, and similar pay as you go rate in excess of $20,000 per GB.

This further reinforces my distaste for AT&T.
