I want to have ability to upgrade one of two phones on an account. Don't care about the 2nd once the 1st edge's up. But I don't know which phone we will want to edge up.

Can one do this?

I read this on VZW's website:

You can only "upgrade" the line that is at the end of the 2 year contract (the one eligible). You can however go into a verizon store and switch the numbers on the 2 phones (swap devices). Then join the "Edge" program on the "other" phone, then go into the store and swap phones back. You CANNOT SWAP phones after you join "Edge", "Edge" is a 24 month payment plan without a 2 year service contract, your old phone is a 2 year service contract, PLEASE do not confuse the two.

Why do you want to use edge and not get the subsidized price?

Not sure what your question is?

You can only edge when out of contract.

I thought the point of paying more for Edge was to upgrade after 50% of phone paid off / 6months.

I want to have option to do it on one of two phones on account.

Technically, you do NOT have to be out of contract. At least I didn't with my two lines. You just need to be eligible for an upgrade (which is usually at the end of a contract)

My contract ends Feb 2014 but my upgrade date for my two lines is(was) 31 Aug 2013. I have a new droid maxx and the wife has the note 3, both on the edge program. My obligation to the old access plan ends in Feb but my next upgrade date is in September of 2015

While it is cheaper to get a subsidized price and sell the phone after a year to purchase a new one at full price, I was not interested in putting forth the time to sell two phones on my own and I'd rather just trade it in to Verizon for a new one.

For me edge is a little more expensive but more convenient

one thing about the edge program you need to know, if you don't, is that if you haven't paid the phone in full by the time you want another phone, you need to pay them 50% of the remaining balance AND RETURN THE PHONE TO THEM before you get the new phone. so it seems that if you have the cash to pay for the phone in full, at least you get to keep the phone and sell it when you get your new one.

Not if you like notes. At 299 you can pay a whopping extra 50 bucks a year for the privilege to get every new note. Totally worth it for some, although there should be a discount for not having a subsidized phone. That part is a rip.

Not really.

buy a GN3 for $300, use it for a year, ETF would be 350-120=$230. As long as you sell the GN3 for >$180 (I sold my one year old HOX for $200, new GN2 is selling for $600), it will be cheaper than the edge program.

That's just it, I am to busy to sell a phone and meet someone. So the convenience of a new phone every year without the hassle of having to mess with it is worth it to me. Besides, you can factory wipe your device but your information is still there. Knowing vzw will treat that and I don't have to worry about it is worth it. Besides, not having to throw several hundred dollars down at one is also nice. No interest as well. 29 dollars a month and a new note every year and not having to worry about my data or mess with selling my old phone and not paying all that up front is *better* for me.

Having the *option* is nice. If you don't see value in it, don't use that plan. Simple. For users like myself, I have paid full retail on several phones because I like to upgrade at least every year. Now I can continue to do that and *save* money. I could probably get 300 for my note 2, but my awesome 6 year old daughter enjoys it. My awesome 13 year old daughter enjoys my 32GB sgs3. I paid full retail for both of those. Kind of a hassle as well because it is a significant chunk of the budget. The wife would not be happy. With edge we don't even notice and I can keep em coming.

Sure, everybody can have their choice of options, just need to be sure they know exactly what each option offers.

@T-Mobile GN3

Turns out Edge is not eligible for corporate discounts. Kinda a bummer

You don't get the access discount or the phone discount? I couldn't see someone giving up a discount on their plan.

Verizon Edge is a friggin' ripoff and offers no value, IMHO. I had to do Device Payment Plan with the Note 2 (and I did that on a whim...passing by a Verizon Corporate Store...) I bought a Note 2 through it because anything was better than a Droid Charge (if I knew Verizon was swapping them out to S3s, I would not have bothered with the DPP exercise.)

After a couple of months, I put my Note 2 on Swappa. Was able to get $415 for it (was asking for $425.) Phone was in excellent condition...the only thing that got scratched up was the back of the flip case, but I kept the original back cover that was NEVER used. In any event, I used that $415 to pay off the rest of my balance so that I could do alternate upgrade and get Note 3. I love life now. Even if the Note 4 comes out, I don't see myself switching until at a minimum Note 5. Note 2 was a good phone, but compared to the Note 3 (extra GB of RAM, full HD, better S-Pen functionality) I feel I made the right choice.

That whole upgrade every 6 months and giving the phone back PLUS paying off the balance?! Forget that...but to each his/her own.

You are only required to pay 50% of the total value to trade it in and wipe the remaining balance. For my droid maxx. I will pay ~$350 over 12 months and is will trade it in for a new phone and continue to pay the same ~$27 a month for the new phone.

I'm sure I would pay less overall if I subsidized the phone and sold it on my own 12 months later but I do not have the time or patience to do so.

Edge is about convenience. Not money savings

True it's about getting the latest device when you can. I think T-Mobile has legged just right with their upgrade plan though.

That right there is why Verizon is so profitable. LOL.

Honestly, I get what you mean, though. I thought the alternate upgrade scheme was a PITA before I tried it. I was right (I spent two hours at Best Buy...should have gone Verizon, but I was so excited to get the Note 3...) I think if I had done the DPP with the Note 3, I would not have bothered with alternate upgrade because I don't have the time. In the end, I save a lot of money if I keep it at two years, or perhaps putting it on Swappa after a year for Note "x." In my case, I have to weigh convenience with savings. Let's be honest, if all I wanted to do was save money, I'd be on T-Mobile. But I don't have to go that route yet.

My gripe with the edge program (and other carrier's programs just the same) is that all these carriers used to tell us that we pay higher monthly charges to pay for the subsidy on the phones we buy at contact price. If I'm gong to end up paying the full price of the phone over xx months, why aren't they lowering my monthly access charges? They are no longer offering subsidy on the phones so what gives? Greed.

Funny, I just got a flyer in the mail from Verizon about edge today on my unlimited line which is still under contract
