Today I got a message in the message+ app that verizon is shutting it down and made it easy to switch to google messages so I did. I have a custom ringtone for message notification, one I made myself and have been using on message+. But I can't find a way to change the notification sound on google messages! The little meteor ding doesn't catch my attention at all but I can't find any way to switch it to anything else, let alone my custom sound. I've already missed messages. I checked settings in the app and from the settings menu. I don't see any option that allows the notification for google messages to be changed . .. just allow or silent. I have the option of another message app that came installed on the phone. I've tried it and wasn't impressed.
I may as well ask now . . . does google messages allow any customization? Regardless, the sound notification will be the reason I keep or abandon google messages. Please tell me if it is possible to change the sound notification on google messages and if so, how to access changing the notification sound .

Go to Settings>Apps, select Google Messages, then Notifications. Tap the words "Incoming messages" (and NOT the toggle). Then tap Sound. You can select a new default tone there.
I am sending a screenshot shot that shows what I get when I tap settings>apps>Google messages>notifications

Also I did an AI chat with Gemini that among other non-helpful suggestions, said my version of the app is old, I should uninstall and reinstall. When I tried, I got the message that I can't uninstall system apps only updates. I figured that wouldn't be helpful.
Meanwhile i've gone back to message plus because I was missing seeing texts since I didn't notice the little ping when they came in. Message+ says it shuts down on 11/7/24.

Ah, I see that you have a Samsung phone. Samsung's menus are a little different from Pixels (because different is good, I guess?😕). From the screen you showed, scroll down and tap Notification Categories. In the next screen, under Default Settings, tap the words "Incoming messages" (and NOT the toggle switch). That will bring up the menu that has the Sound option, where you can then change the default notification tone.

well this is odd when i click on default sms app it only showing verizon messenger plus a samsung messenger there's no option for google messenger

so i assuming if i were earlier this morning agree to switch google messenger then samung messenger wouldn't be show as default messenger instead it will show as google messenger i assumed under default sms app

i do understand from this video if i had a newer phone that if you were download samsung messenger in galaxy store

under 3.5.5 when click descriptions

this is samsung only limitation features like does not support samsung themes and other stuff however when i go to look inside galaxy store doesn't have that part and it seems got updated weds

so why heck they making older phones like s20 to have google messenger that ain't right seems as of now i'm ok

i figure out i don't even have google messenger to install in 1st place was never install on s20 i take it back if i were upgrade early yesterday morning it will prob install google messenger for me in google play store without my permission and replace samsung messenger then make it default messenger aka google messenger meh

isn't my phone already back up in 1st place after they switch it from old device s7 to s20 when i replace phone from walmart? i know verizon samsung cloud no longer works btw

Hi!

I have a Samsung. You seem to be missing a setting option from looking at your screenshot.

You should see:
•Notification Categories (just like @B. Diddy said)
Then be able to select:
•Incoming Messages
Then:
•Sound

At that point you can assign something that you can hear better.

Which phone do you have & what version of Google Messages?

You are correct. If you delete a message it's gone. (AFAIK)
They don't have a trash can like Samsung Messages.

Well this depends on how you accidentally delete the message.

Like many of you I use gestures so for me, I accidentally delete my messages by swiping them away trying to return to my home screen. By default swiping messages away sends them to archive and they can be recovered from there from the settings menu. Now if you choose to delete the message by choosing something that says "delete" the result may be different but this archive glitch has saved me many times. In fact you can set it up to archive if swiped in one direction and a different action, I assume delete, in the other direction. I'll post screenshots of the options when I get a moment.

So there may be no trash with Google Messages but this is a nifty little safety feature none the less.

Messages also has a pretty robust spam function. I would say about 80% of the time I don't even get the messages and the other 20% I get the message but at the top of the message as soon as I open it Messages asks if this is spam. If you say yes it always asks what you want to do, block and report or just report I think are the only 2 options, why you would choose the latter I'm not sure but it's an option.

Since this thread is about Verizon's actions and Messages I will say that with Spam protection on it sends Verizon's SMS saying thank you for reporting Spam to the spam folder. There's a button when I open the message that says, Not spam, and returns the message to my threads for a short time, and then send them all back to spam. I do and don't want these messages. I would like to see them because I get these for messages that automatically end up the spam folder too, and without these messages there are messages that I never see because they go straight to the folder without notification. I'll post screenshots.

BerryBubbles, You are right! I have samsung galaxy s22. I am going to send screen shots to show how I got app version.
I dont know if these will come out in order. (edit: after posting it seems that the order is correct.)
First one shows i have to get app details from play store.
The next shows I'm on the playstore page.
Then I scroll to about this app.
Final one shows app version.

Okay, that's perfect, Thank You!

Try this:

Go into settings, notifications, advanced settings, then check if manage notification categories for each app is toggled on. If not, switch it on, then go back & check if the notification categories option is now showing in the Google Messages app.

BerryBubbles, Thank you so much! That worked perfectly. I never even noticed advanced settings. Well, I guess I'm a google messages user now . . . .

Great! 👍 You are very welcome!

Google Messages seems to be in constant development right now. They're fine tuning & adding features. On occasion, after an update, I lose my chosen notification sound. So if you notice you're not hearing your notifications again, you might want to check & see if your sound choice changed.
😄

I thought I saw someone briefly touched on your question, not devoting a whole post to it, but my guess would be if it asked you once and you didn't switch it will ask you again and again. With most notifications like this from Google anyway, and Samsung may handle things differently, there will come a time when it will more or less count down warning you to take action. The last notifications may also include an "if you do nothing" statement when time is very near the end which outlines what will happen if you continue to do nothing.

As for your last question, if you don't have the app on your device, actually this is likely true even if you did, it will not install an app automatically or switch you automatically, but you may be warned that without an alternative you will lose data, i.e. messages, the ability to send or receive or things along those lines. While it is unlikely that they will try more than encouraging you to get a replacement, they will 100% uninstall the app from your device without your permission. What happens without a replacement, I guess can you wait around and find out.
