Verizon Limits International Data plans

Maybe this is just an extension of the tiered data plans coming to the US, but its now pretty expensive to use a Verizon phone internationally. Last year when I was in Europe they had unlimited data for about $60/month. Now their plans are either 30mb or 70mb/month. 70mb costs $100! Last month I used ~425mb on my Fascinate so that would kill me in Europe. I was really looking forward to all of the capabilities of my phone with google maps and everything else in Europe but because of such a cap and expensive data I'm having to break out my Blackberry Tour for my upcoming trip. Because that phone can do so much less relative to my Android phone I should probably be ok. The new rates and caps suck though!

Call global support, they still offer unlimited data, the stores just don't know about it. I just went to Asia and used it again.

I'm on the phone with them now. No unlimited. Only the 30 and 70mb plans

They do not. Only for corporate accounts.

OK, maybe mine is considered a corp account. is this a reason to consider Sprint? I have no clue if they do a international data plan or not. I was hoping by now one of these carriers would have a world phone with a GSM radio in it which you could simply throw a pre paid SIM in at your country of destination. This is so simple with US GSM phones, but I don't have a ATT or TMO account...

Will the 4g phones that have a SIM card be able to do this?

They are not GSM SIM card slots, they're LTE.

Do you get a SIM card from the country you are going to and activate it there? Are you roaming on Verizons network or what?

I just want to know what I would do if I went to Italy or Canada - what are the steps and what are the costs to get voice and data. Whose network are you actually using.

I'm vacationing in Croatia at the moment with my Blackberry Bold (world phone). As I understand it, the new Android world phones work the same. The don't have a sim card like the typical GSM phones do. I think they just have both CDMA and GSM antennas so that they will work in Europe. You still have to get the international data plan (at painful rates). The largest plan is 70mb for $100 which doesn't get you very far on an android phone (hence me using my BB for the trip). You roam onto whatever network is in the country you're in. Currently my phone says "HR VIP - vodafone NL"

Ahh Thanks. I guess that means there is no point in having a world phone. All marketing crap. Id rather pick up a pay as you go phone for dirt if I travel.
