I use Verizon messages+. Or until they discontinue it. I'm trying google messages and absolutely HATE it! I have had a Samsung phone forever and google messages just isn't working. My first issue ( and the biggest) is that when I reply to a group message, my response goes to every person in the group as a single text. There are so few settings for gmessages and I can't find where to go to fix this. I need a crash course!

I found a setting under Advanced, Group Messages. The first option was the one sending individual replies to everyone, which was extremely frustrating. The 2nd option seems to have fixed it for me.

What is in the Pro version? I currently have Verizon messages (and I am a Verizon customer) but unfortunately that app is being discontinued in November and I was looking to use Textra.
The Pro version just removes the ads.

The features on the free version are the same as the pro version. The only difference is the ads, AFAIK.

I have been testing different apps, currently using Verizon Messenger+ which I love.
Chomp SMS and Textra are made by the same developer. Chomp has a lot more customizations but of the 2 I prefer Textra. It just feels better for me. Some little think about Chomp I didn't like. I will say that whenever I sent a message for help they answered within 1 day or less.

Since yesterday I have been trying Handcent Next SMS and so far it is VERY similar to Verizon and I think I am liking it better than Textra. Handcent does have it's own backup if you prefer but I use SMS Backup & Restore. Handcent has a lot of features and customizations.

Google messages I tried and just didn't like.

I have been using Google messages, cuz I haven't found anything else yet. I definitely don't want to deal with ads! It's just soooo blah compared to Verizon message+. And I'm still pretty pissed at Verizon 😖. Thanks for the suggestion of handscent, I will definitely give it a try.

I use Google messages because I need RCS for texting over WiFi...just makes everything more seamless. I travel a lot, and this works well when my travel esim doesn't work in certain countries.

I use a lot of group messages and like to see who is posting what message. I don't care about RCS. And I like to have favorites at the top. Does Textra do that? Does it have the name of the person that posted in the group?

Same question for Handcent. thanks so much

Nevermind - neither app is functional on my tablet, which I use all the time. -not compatible it says.

I'm in the same camp, sort of. In that I don't want to rely on Google. I've gone from liking Google to swing them as the lesser evil between them and Apple.

Even Samsung Messages which was superior (IMO) to G-Messages except for no spam filter is being fazed out. Dual SIM RCS? Not even the fricken Google app can do it.

Messages is a bloated mess that will undoubtedly be either rebranded or killed in favor of something else. Unfortunately nothing else worthwhile even supports SMS fallback like Telegram or Whatsapp. Signal did but they dropped SMS and everyone i converted was pissed and dropped it.

Google needs to get off Apples lap and open the RCS API and JIBE Servers to 3rd party apps, even if that means no encryption, it would be a fair tradeoff as app devs could add their own encryption.
