Verizon has announced that they will be rolling out XLTE, and that most phones made within the last year should support it. Apparently the spectrum required is called AWS. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what AWS is and whether or not the Moto X is compatible.

Edit: Ignore this, I was mistaken in information. The other posters are correct.

AWS is the 1700/2100 band spectrum and Verizon has been adding some that it purchased to large cities in order to mitigate congestion. The Verizon of the X does not have the hardware radios required to connect to it. Other devices that do will require an OTA update from Verizon in order to access it.

This is not true. The Verizon moto x absolutely supports AWS. If it didn't I wouldn't be able to get it to connect to T-Mobiles LTE network which is AWS only.

So just to make sure I understand fully... You are using a Verizon branded Moto X on T-mo's LTE? Just curious because some Moto X's with different model numbers support different radio bands.

Interesting, the spec sheet I checked out didn't have the bands specified in posts about XLTE. Digging further.

It looks like it supports bands 4 and 13 LTE and UMTS bands 850, 900, 1900 & 2100.

I was under the impression that XLTE required either 700 or 1700 to work, but another article said that the S4, S5, M8 and all three 2013 Droids support it.

XTNiT-1060 through spacetime.

Band 4 is 1700 /2100 MHz, band 13 is 700 MHz upper C-Block.

I have been trying to get a definitive answer on this since I bought the phone. My understanding is that the Moto X has all the hardware it needs, and Verizon will have to push out a software upgrade to enable the AWS connectivity. To date I have not seen anything definitive from Verizon, but I believe we should be included.

This is all very good information. Thanks for all the replies. It's hard to keep track of all the bands and what frequencies the phones support. And even then the phones support some bands that don't ever get utilized by the carrier you are on.

To clarify, Verizon's XLTE is just Band 4(AWS) enabled areas.

When it shipped, the X only supported LTE band 13. Band 4 (AWS) support was added in the 4.4 rom.

If you still have 4.2.2 on your phone, you won't see LTE Band 4.

I have been picking up AWS for a while now. These networks have been around for many months and my X has been using them during that time. I was near Sea-Tac friday and my speedtest was 32 Mbps down and 32 Mbps up on AWS (XLTE).

Maybe, maybe not. Before VZW turned on AWS in my area, my X got 10-15mbps. After, I got upwards of 55-60mbps. Some days I still only get 20-25mbps.

Example: May 22 @ 9:29am I got 50.43 down, 4.58 up. May 19 @ 7:52pm I got 27.10 down and 3.34 up.

Ry,

I never got faster than 13mbs up (at least according to the speed test app history back to Nov 2013.) "over all" best are 59.21/12.14 on April 17 @ 10:21pm and 64.51/11.95 on April 17 @ 10:22pm in my house.

I have some oldest test in my history is 11/23/13 @ 4:17am for 27.33/3.07. and I have many like 43.54/4.64 and 39.60/4.65 mixed in between.
