Verizon, The Good and the Bad

I've been a Verizon customer since it took over the GTE accounts back in the day. The company's track record has always been a mixed bag. On the one hand, the game playing that goes on in regard to device roll out dates and major software/firmware releases, as is going on with Froyo on the DINC gets very old. On the other hand Verizon has always had what I consider to be good customer service. I got my DINC on its roll out day, 12/29/09. It developed a problem that some have seen. It was cutting off the ringer when the phone was face down on a surface. It got the point where the increasing frequency of the problem led to a call to tech support last week. After a factory reset failed to resolve it, a refurbished DINC was shipped to me overnight. It does not have the ring cutoff problem, and aside from a slightly less positive feel when the power button is pressed on one side, it's every bit as good if not better than my original phone. Now if only Froyo was sent out to us "early adopters" first, life would be just grand :)

I don't think Verizon has the ability to push the OTA to the early adopters first but that is a great idea since I always get my phone on their launch date.

That's supposed to happen. Check out page 43 of the user manual.

Big red has done this with every platform in terms of software updates.
I don't even care anymore...When it happens, it happens.

Not at all. The manual gives you a way of killing the ringer by actually placing the phone face down once a call comes in. it also says that subsequent calls will ring normally if the phone is already face down. My problem was that if the phone was face down and a call came in, usually from another cell phone from Verizon or another company, the ringer would sound for a second or less and then completely cut off. The vibration alert could do likewise at times. This meant that if I was not near the phone and it was face down on a table in or out of the case, I might never even hear the ringer and miss the call. It wouldn't happen on every call but enough to be a major problem and Verizon obviously agreed. One other thing that never worked well on the original DINC was it's decreasing the ringer volume as you brought the phone close to your ear. The refurb does this without fail. My suspicion is that the sensor that triggers these actions as well as the blacking out of the screen when the phone is on your ear, was defective.

The game is all on your end. Verizon if they had their way would say absolutely nothing and then one day you would get a popup that would offer you a new OS.

Its Engadget and Andriodcentral and Droid-Life and so on that makes a game of release date guessing. You by visiting these sites are the one that is feeding that game.

Word! Nothing is ever released from Verizon until they are ready. It is all speculation and rumor until that point.

So, is the iPhone coming to Verizon labor day? See, that is what I'm talking about. I just can't help myself. "Somebody stop me!"
