To clean the cache you don't want to go into recovery.

Go to Settings > General > Storage > Cached Data.

Is your phone slowing down? What are you trying to do?

im having trouble sending and receiving mms picture messages. I read that it could be an android 7 bug and not an app issue. so wanted to see if clearing the cache partition helps. I am using textra

Does the stock messaging app work for Mms? I use textra also.

I have a V20, albeit am unlocked model that I'm using with AT&T. I use Textra and don't have any problems with MMS.

well after rebooting my phone a few times trying to enter recovery mode, I just tried sending an mms using the stock lg messaging app and it went through. then I tried sending an mms using textra and that also went through. oh well, seems to be working now

I'm glad it's working for you and hope it continues to work properly.

yeah thank you, I hope so to. Although I would still like to know how to enter recovery for the future. does anyone know how its done on the Verizon version? seems to be different than others.

It's different in that I think Verizon is the only version of the V20 that lets you access the recovery menu, so yay for that. I will also add that they changed how to do it in one of the system updates. I'll give you my current, and easier method, first, then tell you the old way just in case yours is still using that method.

Make sure the phone is fully powered off.

Press and hold Power + Volume Down until you're in recovery mode. That's it!

When you start holding the buttons, the phone will vibrate after a few seconds. A few seconds later, the LG splash screen will show as normal. Just keep holding and the recovery screen shows in a few more seconds.

Now the original way...

With the phone off, power on as normal. Let it go through the LG splash screen until the "Hello" splash animation starts. At this point is when you initiate the buttons. Since I'm going purely off, memory I can't promise this is the right combo, but I think it was Power + Volume Down as well. (If this combo wasn't it, it was some combo with the power button, plus one or maybe both volume buttons.)

So at the Hello animation, press and hold Power + Volume Down AND KEEP HOLDING! The phone will appear to reboot, showing the LG splash screen and perhaps the Hello animation again, making you think it didn't work. Just keep holding the buttons and it should go into recovery. If you let off the buttons before entering recovery, then yes this faux reboot would continue as a full boot. If you're pressing the buttons and it still boots as normal or perhaps shows a screen with a barcode on it, then I didn't remember the button combo correctly and you have to try again with one of the other two possibilities.

Power down.
Press and hold volume down button.
Press and hold power button, while continuing to hold the volume down button.
The recovery menu should appear in a few seconds. Release both buttons and scroll down to "clear cache" using the volume down button.
Select by pressing power button.
The phone will reboot normally.
My other LG devices reach the recovery menu every time, using this method. However, my V20 will sometimes just reboot without reaching the recovery menu. When this happens, I power down and start over.
I usually clear the cache whenever I swap batteries, because it only takes a few seconds longer than rebooting normally.

Oh. What does that do then and when should I consider doing it?

The system cache is the Linux cache partition. You should consider clearing that if and when your phone exhibits odd behavior, as a last resort before doing a full factory reset.

Sometimes after an update it's useful to clear it out in case some data is cached in an "old" format for some underlying system app or service that has changed the format it expects - some services get a little confused and don't recognize that they need to purge their own bits out of cache and act weird.

On my old Note 4, I usually clear the system cache about once a month, immediately after receiving the monthly security update. It probably doesn't help anything to do it that often, honestly, but I don't feel that it can really hurt...

I see no way to clear system cache other than how we all know through system settings. If you know another way let me know because recovery mode on my V20 only takes me though factory reset

If the instructions above aren't working (which match the instructions on XDA) then it's possible your carrier variant has (for some reason utterly beyond me) removed the ability to do it.

My AT&T V20 when I access recovery mode. (see picture)

Also everything I've searched for specific to clearing the system cache on this phone showed the instructions through system settings and storage. So I'd love to know if there is a real difference in the methods and if so how to do it through recovery.

There is a real difference in what the two methods do. But, unfortunately, in the V20's case, it appears that one of those differences is that certain carriers have decided that it's not something they want you doing any more. That's unfortunate. Clearing that cache partition is occasionally useful.

I do know there are certain menus AFTER boot that are restricted if my AT&T SIM is in my Note 4. I very, very much doubt that pulling your SIM will somehow make an option available in the recovery menu - I don't even know how that would work - but ... maybe?

Reverse that. It's more like LG didn't want this ability and it was a carrier that demanded it. In my earlier post when I said the Verizon version was the only one that lets you into the full recovery menu, that statement included the unlocked version as well. Unless something changed through an update, Verizon is still the one and only version of this phone to allow this.

I know there was a random website it there claiming to have the instructions for this, but they also called this the Samsung V20. So that tells you how accurate their info wound up being. Lol

So... On my AT&T V20 (middle) you press and hold volume down then press and hold power, when the LG logo appears, release the power button and press again to reach recovery.

On the Verizon V20 (left) and the Sprint V20 (right) you just press and hold volume down and power and keep holding until it starts recovery mode.

Both Verizon and Sprint let you wipe System Cache from here but the AT&T version doesn't.

Obviously the phone has to be powered off first no matter what carrier it is.
