Very Weird Fingerprint Scanner and Touchscreen Problem

The fingerprint scanner on my Samsung Galaxy Alpha is not working. In a very weird way.

When the phone is locked, the fingerprint scanner is completely unresponsive to any attempt to unlock the phone. It does not acknowledge attempts in any way. Fine, so I unlock the phone with a password.

Then I go into lock screen settings to try to change the unlock settings, so that it unlocks with a PIN instead. On this screen, however, the touchscreen itself is totally nonresponsive. Not even the "back" arrow works; I have to use the button at the bottom. The touchscreen works 100% of the time everywhere else, except when I try to change lock screen settings.

I have the same problem for the last month and can’t find any solution that works without involving a factory reset (erasing all SMS and chats) the phone which I don’t want to do. Any help would be appreciated.

If Samsung is reading this I would like to say that I am very disappointed with their support services whose only advise was to reset the phone which any self-respecting technician would know that wouldn’t resolve the problem permanently as the problem might re appear in the future. Based on various post on the web it seems that this problem has existed for over 6 month and Samsung has yet to come up with an update that resolves this problem! Totally unacceptable!!
