I don't know if this is old news or not, but I just came across a Verizon visual voicemail app in the Android market for the Nexus. It requires a subscription of $2.99 a month to access.

When I try to set up Google voice it tells me my carrier is not currently supported

I get the same error with google voice.

It will work for Verizon, you just have to set it up manually. Not sure if it is still correct, but this is what I did way back when to set mine up, Instructions to use Google Voice as your voicemail when people call your cell phone number - Google Voice Help.
