verizon Visual voice mail won't run on my GN.

You did choose the correct version of VVM? There are two apps. You need the one "VVM Nexus".
It has a red icon. I couldn't get it to work either then I saw there was one specific to the Nexus.

this doesn't solve your visual voice mail issue, but may I recommend Google Voice. it handles voice messages very well and it will transcribe the messages too.

Google Voice! Don't waste $36 a year on something that is free and 10X better than Verizon Visual Voicemail. Take a few minutes to learn Google Voice and you will be happy you did!
