Hey Everyone,

So I'm new to Android, just came over from bloody BlackBerry, and I am very excited. I have the HTC Vivid on ATT and I have been doing my homework over the last few weeks about rooting, unlocking, ROM flashing, etc. Hopefully your "conglomerative" expertise can sum up a few questions for me as I have scoured the internet for answers and, due to the "newness" of this phone and how recent developments for it are breaking through, I have yet to find them.

Basically I want to root my phone to reap the obvious benefits and begin learning more about what it can do (my learning curve is very quick). However, I also want to receive the apparent ICS update that is supposed to be out any second now (haha, soon enough, right?) so I can experience it before making a heavy decision like flashing a custom ROM.

So my questions are; Can I still receive the ICS update if I unlock the bootlader as directed on the HTCdev site? AND Do I even have to unlock it if all I want to do for now is root the phone (i.e. will Gingerbreak work on 2.3.4 without unlocking?). Also, if Gingerbreak will work WITHOUT having to unlock, will I still be able to receive the ICS update (I am aware that it will nullify the rooting and that the process is easy to repeat, the main concern lies in the bootloader unlocking)?

I'm still doing my homework and learning lots but I have not seen any heavy talk like this on this site yet so hopefully you all can help steer me in the right direction. I know the HTCdev bootloader unlock works after reading the very techy dev fourms, but there's also speak of the ICS update not getting to unlocked phones, and as I explained, I really want to check out Ice Cream Sandwich first before diving too far in the Android customization world. I think such a new and awesome phone like the Vivid deserves the newest software, and if I still decide it needs more then, I'll start contemplating the full shabang.

Thanks yo

Although I have a HTC Inspire the software and programming are similar since the Vivid is supposedly HTC Inspire 2 though this is not official but coming from rumours. You could supposedly recieve the ics update though a unlocked bootloader but this is not recommended since it messes with things that you would have tinkered and may brick or fused the weirdest software glitch you have ever seen. This can be easily be referenced from Samsung devices, were many people update their phone rooted with unexpected consequences. In simple terms you can update it but many people would say to first locked the bootloader and get it back to stock as much as possible. For clarification, a unlocked bootloader usually doesn't matter but HTC program to unlocked the bootloader isn't exactly... Trustworthy.

Please keep me advised of your experiences with the Vivid, as i'm waiting to get one too. By the way...it's Gingerbread, not Gingerbreak. Thanks.:D

Gingerbreak is a method of rooting Gingerbread. I did not mean to say Gingerbread, thank for your concern however. And the first response was semi-helpful but not a full answer to my inquiry. Step up brainyacks! I know someone has these answers! For now I'm just going to wait for ICS, so much for "mid-january" I mean it is still early 2012 but lets go HTC! Haha.

ICS update will come with a whole new firmware update, we dont know yet if an unlocked bootloader will cause any issues or not...we are waiting just as much as everyone else....
