VLC video orientation

I'm having a problem getting videos shot in portrait mode to display with the correct orientation in VLC player.

I took some portrait videos of my son playing golf using the built-in camera on my Note 4 and when playing them back in VLC, they always show in landscape mode. I've been through the VLC settings and set the orientation to portrait, as well as other settings (automatic, locked at start, etc, etc) and it doesn't seem to make a difference. During playback, I can tap the fit/fill button but the video still displays in landscape.

If I choose to open the videos with the built-in video player on the phone, they open up perfectly but it's a bit of an inconvenience to open up with the built-in player as I have chosen VLC as the default. I suppose I could remove the default and select every time but again, that's inconvenient again.

Can anyone suggest any ways to get VLC to display the videos properly please?

Long, long ago, in a Galaxy... ah, never mind! I used to use VLC long, long... long ago, but found it's settings unintuitive and cumbersome. Very much a pain to use on PC (and I assume on Android), and so, I dumped it.

Try MX Player. It's fast, the interface/options is much easier to setup, etc... and, it'll play your videos in the correct orientation whether in portrait or landscape, right off the bat. On the playback screen, is also an icon that allows you to flip the vids if you like. It's the only other vid player I use nowadays. MX Player has over 3 million downloads on Playstore... that should tell you something! The paid version has no ads.

If you still insist on using VLC, here's a webpage on how to supposedly set it up.

Managed to get VLC working properly by uninstalling the beta (which I wasn't aware I was using) and installing the stable build.

I tried MX Player and it's very good but I have decided to stick with VLC for the time being.
