Vlingo v. Samsung Voice Actions?

Shortly after getting my new SG2, I installed Vlingo from the marketplace - but then I realized that apparently the phone comes preinstalled with Samsung Voice Actions (powered by Vlingo). The only info I can find on this is here.

Does anyone know whether the Samsung customized version of Vlingo has any differences/advantages (or even cons?) over the standard Vlingo one installs from the market?

Finally, does anyone know the phrase to have Vlingo (aka, Samsung Voice Connect) create an appointment in your calendar? "Create appointment" or "Create meeting" don't appear to work.

I too am wondering about this one. I read on the Android Market review someone said it worked better then the pre-installed version. I do know that the pre-installed version you can activate it by saying "Hi Galaxy." I like that better then saying "Hi Vlingo." Also does the pre-installed version ever get updated? Otherwise wouldn't the one from the Market be better?

Speaktoit widget allows you to make calendar appts. but it's not exactly totally hands free. The only other app I know of that will allow you to schedule appts in your calendar is using google voice with mobile calendar. With voice, you send a text message to your calendar with the event details and it will enter the event into the calendar for you. Personally, I've had just about enough of google and everyone else knowing the intimate details of my life, so I just speak a memo with the appt info and enter it later on manually. I know this thread is 2 weeks old, but I thought I'd chime in. Don't know if it will help or not, but thought I'd add my $.02 worth

Thanks for the tip ... I was hoping for something which would allow to make entries into the native calednar app, then sync back up to my google cal. Ah, hopefully vlingo will soon bring that siri-quality too the droid!

I have found that, if you put the widget on your homescreen and select driving mode, and also turn on auto-listening in the settings, when you pick up the phone and hold it to your phone as if you are making a phone call it instantly starts listening which i think is a pretty cool feature

Well, you can do that with Speaktoit. You say, "New appointment, meet Sally for coffee at Peet's October 30 at 12 o'clock" Then you confirm and voila, the appointment is in your native calendar, which then syncs with your Google calendar. It might be worth a try. Sorry, I just don't know any other app that can do it, for Android anyway.

thanks, I grabbed speaktoit, but it seems perpetually stuck in tutorial mode ... didn't have much time to fiddle with it, will need to try later, but first impression is :-\

Downloading Voice Actions (now called Jeannie) from the market, will muck with that to see if it'll work.

ok, i got speaktoit to semi work ... when I treid "new appt ____" it captured some of what I'd said and indicated it was about to make an appt ... but instead of adding the meeting to the local droid calendar (which woudl then have sync'd up to gcal), it attempted to log on to google calendar directly?? meh.

You're right, I had it backwards:-( It enters the appt into your google calendar which then syncs with the native calendar. You have me curious now Why do you want to enter it into the native calendar app first and then sync with google calendar? I've read about the iPhone voice action app and wish Android had something like it. I think they have some issues with it, probably because it's new. I don't understand why google's voice command doesn't include the ability to add appts to their own calendar app. It seems too silly a mistake to be an oversight. They must be working on something. With so many 3rd party email apps losing access to gmail, something must be stirring around this.

Well, so far, speaktoit seems to be the only app for android that allows appts. It takes some getting used to, but it does work.

It's a good app, but you can't make calendar appts with it. I do a memo and then enter ithe appt into the calendar when I get home. Seems silly to have to do this...

Welcome! Make yourself at home and share your wisdom and your questions. I can use all the help I can get! That auto listening feature is great! I used it today while driving. Works like a charm. I sometimes wonder though...what do people think when we're at a light and I'm talking to myself? Lol

BTW, what is the deal with Samsung Voice Command v. Voice Talk? I have found the former (command) to be far more flexible than the latter ... it seems to support a number of options which "talk" does not, e.g. "Note to self" and at least 2-3 others which I can't recall at the moment.

Can anyone advise, then, why one woudl ever use "voice talk?" (and I wish the double-tap home function, whch activates talk, could be repurposed to activate command!_

Voice Command is a tool that allows you to control your phone with voice commands. So, if I'm sitting at my desk working, I can tell my phone to do things like, open calculator, web search, ask it where a place is and it will open maps and show me, etc. For me, it's more of a tool to use if I don't want to manually open an app and type in the request myself. I don't use Command because it can't complete voice-to-text translation commands, like when I want to send a text message. For example, in Voice Command if I say, "send email to john, how are you today" It will take me to the contact, but it won't automatically launch the email and fill it in for me. I have to manually select the contact first, then it will fill in the email.

Voice Talk is more of a voice-to-text translator. In Voice Talk, if I say "send email to john how are you today" it opens the email, addresses it to John, fills in the text for me, reads it back to me and asks me if I want to send it, cancel it or re-write it. It talks to me, where command doesn't. So, Voice Talk is all hands free where Command is not. I also like the option in Voice Talk of waking up the service with my voice just by saying ":Hi Galaxy". This is really handy for me when I'm driving.

I also like Driving Mode in Voice Talk. I turn it on with my voice if I send a text so that it will read the response to me, then turn it off with my voice when I'm done. This way, it won't read every text and email to me. That would make me crazy

Frankly, I think we should be able to assign whatever app we want when we 2-click the home button. You can do it in certain ROM's if you're rooted, but I haven't installed a ROM yet.
