I hope that someone can help me. I just upgraded to the Hero. So far, it is a great phone but one thing is missing. On my old phone, I was able to use voice dialing via the bluetooth headset by pushing 1 button on the headset. So far, i haven't found a way to do this.
Thanks,
John

Android phones do net yet have bluetooth voice dialing.
there are 2 things that I really miss, bluetooth voice dialing and copy and paste.
I still don't understand how or why they left them out. I have a 5 year old phone that can do both. I still LOVE my Droid.

The voice dialer is a piece of garbage anyway. We need Either HTC, Google or Sprint to solve this. This is probably the weakest point or our beloved Hero.

I've been trying to find a solution to this issue myself. I'm conflicted about whether I should return my Sprint HTC Hero and get a WinMo powered "smart phone" (which supports BT voice-dialing), or wait until HTC / Google fixes this problem. When I bought the Hero and saw that it had bluetooth support, I assumed it could do voice-initiated dialing. It doesn't. The alternative to BT voice-dialing is the "Voice Dialer" app on the phone. It has worked succesfully about 5% of the time. That leaves me with no hands-free option in a state (California) where it's illegal to use a phone in your car without a hands-free option. Isn't it ironic that Google is in California?

But, I love everything about the Hero (and the Android OS), except the PHONE! How can a "smart phone" not support a bluetooth feature that has been included in every "dumb phone" I've owned for years? I've been researching this a lot over the last several days. I've been tempted to wait for the Android 2.1 update for the Sprint Hero, but now that the Motorola Droid and the Google Nexus One have hit the market with Android 2.1, it looks like they don't support bluetooth voice-dialing either!

Can someone more knowledgable about 2.1 confirm this?

Cheers,
Tim

I take a little bit of this back.

Ive experienced that when u say your command with no pauses in it (Ex. "CallMaria"instead of "Call Maria")the phone reacts way better and its actually a little more usable.

Still doesn't work with bluetooth. And still the fact that when it works u still have to look at the screen and touch it to select the command defeats the purpose of voice dialing(or voice anything for that matter)

For example on a Blackberry u say your command, then it starts reading out the options one by one which u need to answer yes/no or cancel. If u say no it will read out loud the next option. If u say yes then takes action. No need to look at or touch the phone. And works with bluetooth.

Hopefully all this will be fixed with the 2.1 update

This said, this is still the most awesome device Ive ever had(Had Windows mobile and BB's before)

And this is revalent to the Hero how? I mean my wife's pre does it to but I didn't post about it in the Hero section.:p

It's relevant because earlier in the the thread there's a claim that the lack of voice dialing is a capability lacking in the current Android OS, not because of a specific device (e.g., the Hero). The fact that it works on the Moment contradicts that.

Actually it's relevent for me. I was the poster who assumed that the Android OS didn't support voice-dialing over bluetooth. I made the assumption because there haven't been any Android phones (that I'm aware of) to date, that support voice-dialing over BT. All of my inquiries with the Android experts seem to support that assumption. That omission in the Hero's bluetooth features is a big show-stopper for me. If Android 1.5 really DOES have the hooks in firmware to support voice-dialing over BT, then I've been getting wrong information and I have to wonder why Sprint hasn't fixed that issue.

I LOVE my Hero and I would miss HTC's Sense UI, but I'm definitely going to check into the Samsung Moment as an alternative to the Hero.

Cheers,
Tim
