I bought Consumer Reports June issue 2015 few days ago. They review 1000+ gadgets. On page 89 and 90 they show best cellphones. The top of the list is Samsung Galaxy S5. I guess 6 is too new to review. Anyhow S5 got all EXCELLENT marks (Ease of use, Messaging, Web Browsing, Display Quality, and Battery Life) and VERY GOOD for ( Phoning, Camera: Image Quality, Camera: Video Quality, and Portability) But for Voice quality it was GOOD. Just GOOD and not EXCELLENT. I was surprised. I thought a 600 dollar phone would be EXCELLENT and not just GOOD. All 56 phones listed were either GOOD or FAIR. No poor thank god. But none VERY GOOD or EXCELLENT. Not even the expensive ones. I thought at least one would be EXCELLENT. None of them were. Are smart smart phones really that bad. Or Consumer Reports is just being too hard in their testing process.

They usually describe how they test products, and how they rate them. Their point is probably that despite the advancements in mobile technology, sound quality (when listening to the earpiece speaker, not via headphones) is still not as good as a high quality landline. This is due in large part to the network itself, not necessarily the phone. As more phones start to take advantage of things like HD voice, you might start to see more Excellents.
