Voice recording - poor results - hardware or software?

I've tried a few voice recording apps (e.g., Hi-Q MP3, RecForge, Virtual Recorder), and I'm not having much luck. Each one seems to have problem recording clean sound, in particular there are period reverberations and distortion (not static, as in from the mike, but sounds like processing errors).

I'm trying to figure out if this is a problem with those particular apps, or if it's the hardware. Does anyone have an app that they've tried (included any of these) that have provided good results on their Epics? This is an important function for me, and so far I'm a bit underwhelmed with the phone's performance.

There's an app called "Voice Recorder" that comes with Froyo. I just recorded myself counting to 20 and it seemed to work pretty well.
