Voice recordings - since last Android update - lowered volume

I have noticed when i do a voice recording on my Verizon Messaging Plus or on my Voice Changer app, that when i play it back, i can barely hear it. So i need to crank the volume up to hear it. But then when i play other audio , i have to turn it down some. Any idea why this changed? I shouldnt have to crank it up so much to hear a voice recording that i made. This is on the HTC ONE M8 and i never used to have this problem ..before the last update.
