Today I thought I would investigate alternatives to the preloaded voicemail app. A search using voicemail in the market I seen youmail visual voicemail google voice and misc other stuff that I have no idea if there are even relevant. youmail isn't top rated as I'd expected. And I'm not sure I understand google voice. It doesn't sound like a good idea to turn my sprint number into a google voice number and I don't know if it works for getting your voicemail otherwise. So I thought I would post and see what everyone here has to say on the topic of a replacement for the preloaded voicemail app. My main problem with it is volume speaker phone or not it is so quiet that I almost never can hear the messages well enough and end up calling the voicemail system. And I always check the volume leveling thinking it's not all the way up to find it is all the way up.

You can use Google Voice just for voicemail; it will ask you during setup, and it works nicely.

I use Google voice with the Sprint integration (turned my Sprint number into a Google number) and I love it. My voicemails get transcribed for free, and I never have to worry about losing text messages cause they're stored online. Also, I can text from my computer, which is way easier and faster than texting off my phone.

It gives me other options, too, like the ability to block or spam certain numbers (great for annoying telemarketers!) and I have it set up to ring my house phone when someone calls my cell phone so I don't have to worry about a dying battery, etc when I'm at home. And, I can text and get texts for free when I'm traveling out of the country over wifi, which is pretty awesome. Basically, I love how customizable it is and it's made my cell phone experience much better :)

I just re-read this post and feel I should say that I am not affiliated with Google Voice in any way, nor do they pay me a commission to advertise for them. Lol.

I'll have to check it out then. If for some odd reason down the road one would want to covert sprint number to google voice I assume one could still do so after setting it up to do voicemail only. I'm also going to assume that setting it up for voicemail if for some reason down the road I need to reverse that and go back to the stock voicemail app or even to a different 3rd party voicemail app there would be no problems in doing so. I know one of my concerns with coverting my number to google voice number is the assumed hassle of being able to undo it or even inability to undo it at a later date if for some reason I needed to. I've been a long term sprint customer and have been extremely satisfied with the quality of service I get wherever I am and am reluctant to change too much and chance messing up a good thing :)

Yes, you can go back and forth and change the settings. I've even used my GV account with different phones in different ways, so I can't imagine you would have any issues.

Well I tried it out and it wasn't any better than the built in one was working. However the volume problem appears to have been an issue on sprints system before the voicemails got to my phone. But bear with me as I describe briefly what I did from installing GV to now.

I installed google voice, followed the setup, had someone call and leave a voicemail, and uninstalled it because I wasn't happy with it. Because it appears that google voice replaced sprint which is what I was trying to avoid. The only good thing was the volume tiny bit higher otherwise I was now getting three notifications for voicemail (txt, email, and google voice app). Perhaps I misunderstood or worded my post bad but I thought it was simply going to download my voicemail from sprint's voicemail system like the built in voicemail app does. But anyways so I had to call sprint to have them undo whatever happened as a result of setting up google voice app.

Which leads to the sort of good news. The voicemail volumes are back to normal. But sprint had to delete voicemail setup completely and then add it back onto my line. And I had to go through and configure voicemail system again as if it were my first time ever using my line. I guess in the end it was worth it since the voicemails volumes are now fine. But I still get stupid 9016 text message saying I have a new voicemail. Which happened when switching to CM7 and I still can't get an answer as to why and how to stop it. But at least I can hear the voicemails without having to call voicemail like the old days.
