How does voicemail work on Nexus devices? Sorry this is my first Nexus and I'm just not sure.

I'm with Sprint and currently have visual voicemail on my S5.

Thanks for any info!

I want to know the same thing. This is my first non-Verizon branded phone so I'm not sure either. Just regular voicemail, not Visual Voicemail. And I don't want to use Google Voice. Tried that before on another phone and did not like it.

Just hold down 1 and it dials voicemail.

Standard, non- visual voicemail will work on a Nexus the same as it does for any other phone.

For visual voicemail there's Google Voice, which is much more than just visual voicemail. If you don't need or want a Google Voice phone number but would like the visual voicemail and most of the other cool features of Google Voice there's Google Voice Lite:

@cyndie1030: If you want to give Google Voice or Google Voice Lite another try, I can probably help. I've used it for years. It's really very good.

Visual voicemail can be added for T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon or Metro PCS by installing their own voicemail app available in the Play store. Sprint doesn't appear to have a VV app. Just search for 'T-Mobile voicemail' or whatever.

There's also apps like Youmail (which seems to be kinda buggy) Visual Voicemail Plus and nany others. However, there may be monthly service charges. Search for 'visual voicemail' to find them.

If on Fi, the dialer app has visual voicemail. Not sure if it will work with other carriers. Your carrier may have their own VVM app.

Thanks! Are there any options for visual voicemail? Not a deal breaker just wondering :)

Edit: thanks @Crashdamage that was very informative! :)

Most carriers have own voicemail app. AT&T app works with any phone, not just carrier branded ones.

As a side note, Verizon's VVM app was developed by Motorola and only works on Motorola phones (Nexus 6, Moto X, etc)

I just got my 6P on Tuesday and had this same question.

Coming from Sprint and an HTC ONE M7, they had their own visual voicemail app tha appears to be sourced from Sprint themselves according to info within the app, I'll have to now venture out on a new one it appears.

Now that more phones are rolling out, I'd expect this to be a usefull thread.

I used Google Voice on my Nexus 5 for the past two years. Uninstalled it when I ordered my 6P because Visual Voicemail is supposed to be native in 6.0.

I installed the ATT Visual Voicemail app (got it from XDA Developers site) and installed it as an untrusted site. It all works well now that it is set up.

The ONLY difference is that in my dialer, I used to have a swipe screen (keyboard, contacts, recents, ... for voicemail. Instead I must go outside the dialer into the Visual Voicemail app. Not a deal breaker, but still... Wish I knew how to add it and have it like it was.

If you use google voice VVM is awesome in 6.0. Another tab is added in the dialer and you can play directly through stock dialer like you would on an iphone. Works much better than TouchWiz on lollipop
