Volume Control Display won't disappear

My first Android phone in 10 years

Whenever I use the volume control buttons on the phone, the volume animation on screen appears and then will not disappear - which is hugely annoying when watching a video.

All I can do to make the on screen animation disappear is rotate the phone in an app which support screen rotation.

If I am just on the home screen, i have to open an app, just to get the volume controls to disappear.

Is there a setting I am missing? or is this normal on android?

It's not normal. It happened to me once only. I just restarted my phone and it didn't happen again.
