Volume issues when listening to Spotify through headphone jack

When listening to Spotify in my car, I connect it to my stereo through the headphone jack on the phone. Randomly, the volume gets super loud -- and then it'll go back down at the same randomness. It's not at the start or end of a song - so it's not that the volume of the songs are different. I suppose it could be a Spotify thing, but I never had this issue on my previous phone. At one point I thought it might have something to do with when the screen is on vs off, or when the Spotify app is actively open or running in the background - but every time I think I find a link to this, I cannot seem to replicate it. So I don't think that is it.

Any ideas? It sometime scares the crap out of me while I'm driving bc the volume suddenly shoots up and makes me jump!! For the safety of those on the road around me, I'd like to figure this one out. ;)

Thank you!!

Does it happen with any other music app or just with Spotify? If it happens with another app, I'm guessing it's a problem with either your AUX cable or the car radio (these are usually the WORST insulated parts of your car and will usually have ground issues, which can cause stray signals and/or noise). Since the headphone jack in your phone accepts commands and volume change from compatible headsets, either your cable or the bad grounding of your car radio can be causing random signals strong enough to trigger a command in your phone (mine gets a faint purring noise whenever I turn the headlights on).

Hummm... good question. I never listen to music through any other app, so I don't know if it does it outside of Spotify. I will try it with another app and see what happens. I can also try switching out the cable for a different one and see if that makes any difference. Thanks for the ideas!! :)

A good practice, by the way, is to unplug the AUX cable from your phone if the cable is attached to your radio when you start the engine. This is usually when the 'heaviest' spike can occur and MAY damage your device (unlikely, though) but it can also trigger weird behavior such as the one you describe. I once had it plugged in to my old iPod and the moment I fired up the engine, all songs were played in Fast Forwad, as if I were pressing the action button on the headphones; as soon as I unplugged the AUX cable and plugged it back in, it acted normally again.

Same thing happens to me, only when I was listening to music with Google all play music. .still can't figure it out :(

Same thing happens to me with Google music. I believe this has also happened while streaming over bluetooth which is strange.

I've been having this same issue, and it's not just with Spotify. I've managed to figure out that the interference is coming from something running in the background. If you go into task manager and go to your RAM tab and hit "clear memory", then the sound will become clearer and louder. I've yet to find what process is running that causes the issue or how to keep it from doing so, but hopefully I've helped someone who might be able to figure it out further. After all, I'm not overly fond of clearing the memory and risking a negative effect to a process that needs to keep running.

I use Google Play Music and this happens for me when I turn on, or off the equalizer. It will suddenly get very loud. Basically I find the audio excellent on the GS4 and with Google Play Music, just this volume thing gets in the way

Same problem here, while listening to spotify with earphones.. doesnt happen often, but maybe once a day.

I could swear the changelog for one of the previous Spotify updates mentioned fixing a bug with volume spikes..if this is the same bug, I guess it's back.

This happens when I listen to Spotify on my iPad. I have also noticed that the commercials are even louder, possibly an inducement to go premium.
