Volume rocker wake?

Hi, I'm recently bought a nexus 5. Its an awesome phone but the problem is that I am left handed and therefore I find it kind of confusing when I pull it put and accidentally press the volume rocker and wait for the screen to turn on. So my question is that is there any way I can get the screen to wake up when the volume buttons are pressed? And also is it possible to do this WITHOUT rooting the phone?

If I understand you right, you want to remap the volume button and make it a sleep wake button?
I seriously doubt that's going to be possible.

That has to do with the kernel I believe. Which requires rooting. That won't be possible without rooting the phone.
