VZW Moto Droid crippled by kitten (Update, see post #7 - please advise)

Our new kitten pulled my charging Droid off the desk and it fell on the USB plug. The USB port on the side is now slightly out of shape, and the contacts have completely broken off. Basically, my Droid is totaled.

I'm not near renewal of my contract or anything of the like. Can anyone offer me any advice as to how to deal with this in terms of getting a suitable replacement? Should I tell VZW exactly what has happened? Are they going to offer me anything reasonable?

Ugh, this is the worst. That and trying not to feel angry with the kitten.

Thanks guys.

if you have the phone insurance through vzw, you should just have to pay $50 for a replacement

I'm not that clever. Went 'pffh, who needs insurance?'. Oops.

Another small issue - my Droid was rooted. Using ROM Manager I've tried to roll back to an unrooted 2.01 image, which worked, but I still have the Super User Permissions icon. What gives?

Guess it doesn't really matter, but if I do end up turning it over to VZW, I'd need it to not be showing signs of hackery.

yep, you could slip by w/o insurance in the old days, but it is practically mandatory with smartphones, lest the unexpected happen

@dancingcrab did you wipe data/cache when you rolled back to the stock 2.0.1?

Yes, I did. The exact error in Clockwork Recovery and SPR (tried both) mentioned Facebook.apk - I don't understand why. I reinstalled rooted 2.1, which worked, but when rolling back to stock 2.0.1, same error.

Okay, I've an important question: I called VZW about the Certified Like New program, and the rep was amazingly kind enough to offer me a warranty exchange for my bust Droid, even though I explained that the cat did it and I don't have insurance. Is sending it back rooted going to get me a $550 bill down the line??

Please advise.

Sorry to bump, but the replacement is coming to tomorrow, so I need to know if I should just send it back. Please help!

Well its been 2 weeks so I guess you sent the old one back . The kitten did damage it so I would have. You never would have gotten that error from trying to go back to factory settings if kitten had not "attacked " the cord .
