My son received a replacement LG G3 and when he put his battery in to boot the phone it prompted him to load 5.01. When I spoke to VZW customer service, they said they are releasing it to 5000 phones initially, and waiting 2 weeks for feedback before releasing to another cohort of phones.

IOW, we don't want to spend the money to test whether we did it right, so you 5,000 people get to test it for us without getting paid. And if it breaks your phone, we'll replace it - in a week or two.

Earplugs in, everyone - we're going to start hearing the screams soon.

5.0.1 still has the very-well-known-by-now memory leak, so no one should be releasing it. 5.1 fixed it, so that's the earliest version that should be released - to see if there are any bugs in it. Released to Verizon employees to run on phones supplied by Verizon, so they still have their own phones if LolliFlop breaks the test phones. But a company that grossed over 60 billion dollars last year (according to their financial statement) with a 9.5 billion dollar net profit, can't afford to test the product they're selling. (The other carriers are no better.)

Hey, something has to be left to fill those golden parachutes, right? (Where do I apply for one of those jobs? I'm coming out of retirement for a year. I'm cheap - $5 million when I retire again and I'll be happy.)

Verizon has to continue to impress shareholders or their stock will tank.

Every company does this on almost all levels.

While I'm not sure how that number was arrived at, we need a release to random user devices, not controlled environment situations. I feel that a device wipe should be needed first. I know it's a pain, but 3rd party apps that once worked on kit kat may cause different problems for different folks on lollipop. I know that the memory leak is an issue but some people have been completely happy with the upgrade across different devices and carriers.

What is the software version for your son's phone, 23B or some other variant?

Nothing on my G3 yet. However I did install 5.0.2 on my Nexus 7 when it first came out...made a nice tablet unusable. A couple months later 5.1 came out and now the tablet is nice again..

I've been using 5.0.2 exactly like whats on my nexus 7 2013 for months. Check out Illusion Rom 6.5. Works like a champ. No problems, calls work, Bluetooth works, gps works, it all works.

I played around with my friends sprint lg g3 with stock lollipop...what a joke.

Sorry to be the one to tell you this. But they are smart to do it that way. You can test all you want, but your QA department will never, ever catch everything. You turn it loose on a subset of your customer base and boom, you get thousands of people testing your software doing things your software testers never imagined anyone would do. Motorola and Verizon do it with soak tests which is OK but the volunteers are generally a bit more knowledgeable about how things work. Which is OK, but not a fair test.

At this point I'd rather Verizon wait till the 5.1 version is ready and push that one out.

Can't argue with that. There's an old saying - never buy the .0 release.
