Waiting for the right tablet

I have been holding out on picking up a tablet, and it's hard to sort through all of the verbatim chinese and russian ad-revenue sites to get an accurate picture of what is coming out soon. I currently like the Acer Iconia A500 the best, but I like the idea of the Asus Memo...that may or may never arrive on shelves.

My question is, should I snag an acer for $350-400 or hold out until the 1st of the year? Will the quads be out by then?

Thanks!

The quad-cores tabs may start showing up 4th quarter this year so if nothing is calling your name and you don't really need it then just wait. Can snag the Acer and look into Quad's next year.

IMO, wait till end of this year or next year. I want one to replace my laptop, But I can share the desktop
for awhile longer....

I just finally got me the Assu Eeepad Transformer. For the money and the build quality of it, you cant go wrong. But then again, thats just me.

You should have a look at Pandigital's Nova which they market as an e-reader but runs Gingerbread 2.3. Is not top notch but for little money you can have a nice toy to play with. No market as of yet but there is lots of workarounds to get apps installed including Amazon's appstore. They are been sold at BestBuy for $170.

I went through several Android tablets, Xoom, Transformer, and Galaxy Tab 10.1. I really like both the Transformer and GT 10.1.

Regarding Transformer vs A500. What turns me off about the A500 is it's heavier weight and it's display isn't IPS so will probably look a bit washed out like the Xoom compared to an IPS display. I probably won't even consider a tablet without an IPS display myself.

But anyway, there are at least 2 good pieces of hardware available. My problem though, the number one reason I returned them all, was Android Honeycomb just doesn't feel ready. It was a frustrating experience of laggy response, crashing apps, and the need to reboot the tablet too often.

I really hope the Android Ice Cream Sandwich tablets will be out soon. That is what I plan to wait for now.

Amazon is rumored to have something out possibly by October. And the rumors suggest they are ordering lots of parts and expecting this to be really big (for an Android tablet anyway).

ASUS and Motorola also preparing sequels for the Transformer and Xoom, supposedly by the end of the year also.

I think it is worth waiting a few more months.

I'm definitely waiting til the end of the year. Between ICS and the possibility of a quad core being released it seems kind of silly to get a tablet at this point.

You could just get an iPad....

Yes I know these are the Android forums, and I love my Android phone, but I also have an iPad. Despite the lack of widgets and general system control over the device which I miss, it's pretty slick.

You'll also have a far better selection of apps that are optimized for the device.

Between ICS and the possibility of a quad core being released it seems kind of silly to get a tablet at this point.

Those are both bad reasons:

ICS: Ice Cream Sandwich is mainly about merging the two branches, but the merge is not equal - it's more focus on bringing the tablet features to the phone, like the activity bar, silkscreen home/back/task buttons, etc. I bet there will be no compelling feature here for tablets.

Quad core: Unless you're running folding at home, there will be no real world noticeable difference at launch, and only after a bit will a few games get their game engines tuned for it, and that'll be it. We just need better quality software at this point for better performance.

I have a Xoom, which now is one of the poorer tablets, but I got it at launch so I've had an instant-on device with Android goodness for 5 moths, so that's fine. (no, these are not investments, and tablets will be invovating at rediculous speeds for the next few years so just realize that).

You are right in the sense not needing Quads at this point. Also about needing to get the software at a better place. I think battery life is the most important item they should look into replacing or work to reduce consumption with software. I still think that if your not really in need of a tablet, then it would be best to wait till end of this year. unlike a phone that you can upgrade if you choose (Sprint Gold member) a tablet is going to be like your computer/laptop. You will have this for several years. So if Quad-core tabs were coming next year or later then yes i would get one today. but its not they're coming soon.

The Xoom, I believe, is actually one of the better tablets because it gets OS updates faster than any other tablet. No tablet currently available is a true generational leap beyond the Xoom. No tablet has twice the processing power, RAM, screen resolution, or battery life. Only the Flyer offers any functionality that is unavailable on the Xoom (or any other tablet).

When we have retina display-level resolution on a tablet, with a battery and processor that can keep up with that resolution, then we'll have something that's appreciably better than a first generation tablet.

Not only will the quad core be out for the crazy holiday buying season, but prices will come down - as they always do this time of year. We're only about 4 months away - so I'd wait.

I might be in over my head here...but have you potential tablet buyers seen/heard/looked into the LG G-Slate?

Major mentioned the Xoom being the top in hardware for tablets...Take a look at the G-Slate...

As soon as Honeycomb becomes more stable and popular (basically saturated) Ill get one, but in the mean time, Ill enjoy my jailbroken ipad2
